NewsFlash

READING
The students are continuing to learn through their reading "rotations" during our reading
block. These activities range from guided reading with me, listening/fluency, drama,
Reader's Wheel/independent reading, to computer and/or nonfiction. We spend half of our reading
block in these rotations, while the beginning half is spent doing whole group lessons in
spelling, vocabulary, read aloud and literature response, as well as skill-based mini-lessons.
We our currently in our fifth theme in the reading book entitled, "Animal Encounters". This
theme ties in perfectly with the science lessons Mr. Whittle has been doing with the students on
ecosystems and plant and animal interdependence.

MATH
In math, we finished up geometry and have moved on to converting between customary and
metric units of measurement for capacity and weight. We continue to do a weekly review of range,
median, and mode. Speaking of review, we will be reviewing all areas of measurement after
Spring Break. The students are continuing to practice their skills with AM (Accelerated Math),
while doing Math Superstars and math games to challenge themselves with some higher order
thinking.

WRITING
We still do D.O.L. (Daily Oral Language) to practice our editing skills when we're not
focusing on a particular grammar skill. The most recent skill we learned about was comma
usage. The students finally finished their Bio-cubes and have displayed them in the library for
all to see. We've been doing some activities and lessons to prepare for another piece of the
writing portfolio, book reviews. The students are in the process of writing, editing, and
conferencing on their first "practice" one. They will compose another book review for a grade
right afterwards.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES WITH MR. WHITTLE
The kids have just completed a unit in science on ecosystems and the
interdependence of plants and animals. The students created their own terrariums to get a first
hand view of this. They've been doing a lot of nonfiction reading and practice with science
E.O.G. questions to prepare for the upcoming Science E.O.G. in early May.
