1st Grade ABC's 2008-2009

I hope the ABC's of First Grade will help answer some frequently
asked questions.

A
Attendance-Regular school attendance is essential for your child to make the most out of his/her education. Please make every effort to have your child at school everyday unless there are appropriate circumstances.
Absences-Whenever your child is absent from school, please take the time to send a note explaining the absence. Your excuse should include your name , your child's name, the date, and why he/she was absent. These notes are kept in your child's folder.
Arrival-Students may arrive at school at 7:30. It is very important not to come before that time, because there may not be any adult supervision. Your child needs to be in the classroom by 8:00.
Assessment-Each child will be assessed frequently through-out the year. Some assessments include phonemic awareness, running records, core words, and writing prompts.
Accelerated Reader-The children will not participate in AR until mid-year. Each child must achieve a certain running record level in order to begin AR. This program is a very small part of a first grade classroom. More info to follow later in the year!
Assistance in the Classroom- We love volunteers and I welcome you into our classroom. I will send information about volunteer opportunities a few weeks after school begins. The children need time to settle into our routines before volunteers begin.
B
Bus, Car Rider or Walker- Transportation issues are very important! I will record your child's mode of transportation at the beginning of the year. A dated note or a call to the office is required for any daily changes.
Birthdays- Birthdays are very important to children. Please feel free to send in a special treat for your child on their special day. We can enjoy these at snack time or lunch time. Check out our list of birthdays.
Breakfast, Lunch and Snack- Breakfast and lunch are served daily. You can apply money to your child's debit account at any time. Always label money sent into the classroom. We will use a snack calendar this year for our morning snack.
Book Orders- We will send home book orders several times through-out the year. Please feel free to participate or not. I utilize the points from the orders to select books for the classroom.
Backpacks- Please check your child's backpack DAILY. All information will be sent home in your child's Parsley folder.
C
Communication- Communication between school and home is crucial. I will communicate with you through weekly newsletters. Please read these carefully in order to keep connected with our classroom. I try to be very detailed in each weekly letter.
Conferences- We will have atleast two parent conferences during the year. More if needed on an individual basis. Please feel free to contact me at anytime with questions or concerns.
Classroom Website and Email- Take the time to visit our class website often. The picture gallery is especially fun to look at. Also, please contact me by email anytime. I check my email several times a day. It's a quick, easy form of communication.
