About The Teacher

My work with children began in 1989 via a combined grant from the National
Endowment for the Arts and the California Arts Council. This grant was for an
Artist in Residence in the Schools project involving a core group of 60
students for a period of five months. The focus was on hand papermaking from
four diverse cultures.I have taught on numerous grants from the North
Carolina Arts Council,Cameron Art Museum and the one time St. John's Museum
of Art in downtown Wilmington.I have also been a teacher for Dreams of
Wilmington for over a five year period and on occassion still give workshops
for them. Dreams is an arts outreach program for youth at risk in New
Hanover County. This is a valuable project that I continue to be involved
with when time allows.

In the summer of 08'I was fortunate to have been part of the Braodway
Lions production of "A Year With Frog and Toad",leading our young thespians
through costumes, sets and props. Also, at the end of this production an
opportunity arose for me to be a fellow teacher for Thalian Hall's summer
theatre arts camp. Last holiday season I was facilitating the mask
making workshops for the Belamy Mansion's now annual Jonkonnu Festival.

This past summer a unique experience was offered to me, which I gladly
accepted. Paul Wilkes of Wilmington, representing Home of Hope, an orphanage
run by the Salesian Sisters in Kochi, India, sponsored a working visit on my
behalf. During my six weeks of living with the girls and the Sisters, I
taught art and English in the classrooms of their school, and completed the
assignment that sent me there: a dedication mural on the front of a new
building which is to be home for the girls. The girls are now happily in
their new space. Much thanks to all who helped, unsolicited, with art
supplies and contributions for my journey. The words of "Desiderata" never
felt so true..."With all its shams, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still
a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy." For more information
about Home of Hope (Parayasha Bhavan), please go to their website

Mission For The Class

This semester I will be integrating studies from some of the other classes
that the students have. The goal is to reinforce those other areas of
learning while still keeping it all fun. The art classes have interfaced
with most grade levels on at least one project over this past year.
A bit of Spanish is always present as well.

As a footnote: last year we introduced clay into the student's vocabulary of
materials. This year we will introduce printmaking, some of which will
address the use of a press. Hand papermaking, my forte for 30 yrs.,will be
exercised in the upper grades.
