SUMMER READING FOR UPCOMING SECOND GRADERS
Your teachers are asking you to read at least one book each week during the
summer. We have not put together a required list of summer reading but
recommend these authors or titles. Try not to let a day go by without
reading.
Author’s Eyes (and others) by Marc Brown
George and Martha books by James Marshall
Amelia Bedelia books by Peggy Parish
Picture books by Kevin Henkes
Picture books by Ezra Keats
Picture books by William Steig
Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel
Other great authors: Eric Carle, Lois Lenski, Don Freeman
Other titles: Henry and Mudge books, Magic Treehouse books, Amber Brown,
and The Zach Files
Don’t forget to read poetry as well as non-fiction.
Please record your summer reading on the attached log. Please return the
log on the first day of school. We will have a summer reading celebration
to recognize your child’s summer reading success.
OTHER SUMMER IDEAS
We have duplicated Core Word Lists for First and Second Graders. Children
should be able to read and spell the first grade list. The other list is
a “heads up” for the upcoming year. Attached is a copy of our timed
addition and subtraction tests. Feel free to duplicate and use to practice
math facts over the summer.
