May 2012

Dear Parents,

The children are finishing the last of the activities from the storyThe Enormous Egg. The Washington, DC brochures they created on the computer are hanging outside of our classroom. The children really enjoyed reading this book and completing the activities.

Earlier this week The New Hanover County Soil and Conversation group came to visit the 3rdand 4thgrade. They learned about different types of soil, recycling, the water cycle, and forestry. This was a great event enjoyed by all. A great big thank you to our parent volunteers Mrs. DiCenzo, Mrs. Payne, Ms Tamisiea, and Mr. Marcel who helped supervise our wonderful children.

The children are looking forward to the May Crowning on May 2. They have been praying for their second grade friends for some time now knowing how important the Sacrament of First Communion is to each child. This is very special for the 3rdgrade because they get to serve brunch to the second graders. Isn’t it a wonder to watch the children grow and be willing to serve instead of being served? Look for an email from Mrs. DiCenzo on ways that you can help with this special event.

In math the children are learning about measurement. They are leaning both customary units and metric units. The children have learned how to find the perimeter and area of many objects. They are also learning to about liquid measurement and converting cups to gallons, pints to quarts, etc. The next time you need help with a recipe be sure to ask for their help.

Our next field trip will be The Tar Heels Go Walking. The permission slips were sent home. If you have not already completed it and returned it to school please be sure to do so. This trip will be on May 15th. We will be doing a walking tour of the Historic Sites I in Wilmington. Then we will have a bag lunch near the beautiful Cape Fear River before heading back to the bus to return to school. If you would like to help with this trip please contact Mrs. DiCenzo.

Our Spring Concert will be on May 23rdat 7pm in the church. Attendance is mandatory for participating grades. Concert attire is required (no shorts, flip flops, tank tops, jeans, short skirts, t-shirts or street clothes). Additional details regarding drop off time will be coming soon.

Peace and Blessings
