Second Grade 2009-2010 Welcome to St. Mark second grade! We are looking forward to many exciting and faith-filled educational experiences this year! We have put this information together to help make this year a wonderful one for your child. Communication: To contact me with questions or concerns throughout the year regarding your child, you may: •Put a note in your child’s folder •Send an email through my Teacherweb page •Call the school to leave a message with the receptionist: 452-2800 *** All transportation changes and absence/sick notes must be made by written note or phone call to the office *** I am unable to address concerns/questions during the school day. In the morning, I am preparing for the day. Thanks for your understanding! Discipline Our goal is to provide a comfortable, Christ-centered learning environment for every student. This is accomplished by establishing clear, fair guidelines for classroom behavior. Our classroom behavior management system is a Token-Economy Card System. Each day students begin the day on a blue card (S+), and each student is given a "Caught Being Good" token. If a student breaks a class rule, he/she will be asked to move a card. He/she will then be on a green (S) card. If the student breaks another rule and moves another card, he/she will be on a yellow (N) card and will lose 1 token. If the student breaks another rule and moves another card, he/she will be on an orange (U) and will lose recess the next day. Any child who is unable to control their behavior will be sent to Mrs. DiFulvio to discuss his/her poor behavior choices. On Friday, students may buy a candy treat with 5 tokens. Students also have the option to save their tokens until the last Friday of the month and buy a treat from the treat box with 20 tokens. Behavior Codes: S+ =Above Satisfactory S =Satisfactory N =Needed Reminding of our rules U = Unsatisfactory Rules: 1. Respect people’s feelings and property. 2. Keep hands and feet to yourself 3. Follow directions the first time. 4. Raise your hand to talk and use inside voices. 5. Focus on your work. In an effort to keep our lunch a time for nourishing our bodies and taking a break, we have established the following rules for our lunch period. Lunch Rules: 1. Enter and exit the cafeteria quietly and sit down in an orderly way. 2. Sit on your bottom with both feet under the table at all times. 3. Eat without playing. Talk quietly with the people near you. 4. Use manners when receiving hot lunch, such as “please and thank you.” 5. Stay in your seat. Raise your hand for an adult to help you. 6. You may use the restroom for emergencies only. 7. Put your trash in the trashcans when it is rolled by you. 8. No playing with your food or throwing food. 9. No sharing food. Playground Rules: 1 .Enter and exit playground area in a single file quiet line led by an adult. Walk through the parking lot to and from the soccer field playground area. No running on the pavement. 2. Stay in the designated area. Permission to reenter the building to use the restroom must be granted by the teacher on duty. Students must be accompanied by an adult at all times. 3. No rough play or tackling. 4. No play fighting. 5. Do not chase another student unless he/she has agreed to play an organized game of tag. 6. Use all playground equipment properly. 7. No running around swing set or jumping from a moving swing. Also look for special notices. Ask for this folder nightly so that you can initial your child’s chart. Please remove notices and completed math classwork from the folder each night. •Friday Folder- This folder holds work that your child has done during the week. Please review all of those papers over the weekend and sign the chart in the pocket. Your comments are appreciated. Remove the papers and keep them, unless you see a paper stamped “Please sign and return.” •Save Folder- This folder is found in your child’s desk at school. We will store papers that we are working on or saving until we need them. Journals •Writing Journal- This reflection journal will be written in weekly and will correspond to our reading program and second grade events. •Poetry Journal- This journal is for poetry that corresponds to our reading program. Reminders: 1. If there is a change in pick-up, you will need to write a note explaining the change so that I will be prepared at dismissal. 2. When your child is absent, please write a note of explanation once he/she has returned to school. 3. If the homework is tedious and your child (and you) are frustrated, just make a notation on his/her paper, and your child will receive credit. Remember to limit homework to 30-45 minutes at most. Sometimes I will misjudge and it might take too long to complete. Every child is different as well. Just let me know. 4. Please send a daily snack for your child. Limit it to ONE item. Since they will be eating it while working, please make it a dry snack (no pudding or yogurt). They may also have an 8 oz water bottle, or a 6 oz juice box. They cannot have any drink with a screw top, as accidents ruin hard work! 5. All children must adhere to the dress code. Please make sure they have correct shorts, pants, belts, flat front skorts (no pleats), shoes, and socks. (and outerwear) Homework: Homework is assigned nightly during the week. Your child will almost always have Spelling and Math work, as well as a Reading Log. It is important to take these assignments seriously, as they reinforce skills we are working on at school. When a child does not come in with homework, time will be set aside during recess for the child to complete their work. * Reading- Each week the students will be given a Reading Log to complete. * Spelling- Each week students will get a spelling list which contains the nightly homework using the spelling words. All words are taken from our weekly story, and follow the phonics pattern we are studying in class. Please make sure work is done on loose leaf paper, has a proper heading, and is legible. * Math- Most math homework assignments will be completed in the student's math workbook. Sometimes students will complete a practice paper from their consumable math books. * Religion- Each Thursday, the textbook will come home for students to complete the chapter review and study for the test on Friday. PLEAE SEND THIS BOOK BACK TO SCHOOL THE NEXT DAY! Your child will need it in class as well. * Projects- During the year, special at-home projects will be assigned. When this happens, a detailed page will come home in your child’s homework folder. Curriculum: A curriculum overview for parents can be accessed through the Diocese of Raleigh website: www.dioceseofraleigh.org During the year, we will focus on the following strands of learning in Social Studies and Science. We will co-ordinate fieldtrips/guest speakers to coincide with these themes. If you know of anyone/anything in the Wilmington area that would be of interest relating to these strands, please let us know! • Citizenship, Civics, and Government • History (changes in communities over time, contributions of various cultures and the importance of individual action and character) • Geography • Economics • Cultures, Customs, and Diversity • Life cycles of Plants and Animals • Weather • States of Matter • Sound Webpage: To access my webpage, go to http://teacherweb.com/NC/SaintMarkCatholicSchool,Wilmington/MrsPeters/ Please check my website weekly for announcements, homework, Language Arts study guide, and more!
