About The Teacher

My name is Susan Trotter Pirkey. I am originally from Jacksonville, Florida
but have lived in Wilmington for 11-1/2 years. I have a wonderful husband
named Michael and a bright, funny (Did I mention adorable?) St. Mark first
grader named Thomas.

Prior to moving to Wilmington, I attended Loyola College of Maryland where I
graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in
1984. After graduation, I moved to Atlanta and worked for 11 years in
advertising and product development.

For several years now, I have felt drawn to the teaching profession. Last
year I decided to explore this interest by working as a substitute teacher
in the middle and lower grades at St. Mark. I found the experience very
rewarding. So much so, in fact, that it has inspired me to pursue my
teacher's certificate. I hope to work toward this goal as a lateral entry
candidate at UNCW.

My goal as a teacher is to make learning fun and exciting. I look forward
to sharing my life-long love of reading and writing with the students and
hope to ignite in them the same enthusiasm. I will encourage creative
expression, both written and verbal, and foresee many lively discussions in
our future.
