BRING it to class on Thursday. You will not be able to participate in class 
on Thursday without the materials.

Dec. 15, 2009:
Math: Workbook pg. 48, 2-14 evens only.

Language Arts: Continue research for Part 2 of the Book Report. Continue 
working on your works-cited page if necessary. The Venn diagram and summary 
parts of the project have been rescheduled for Thursday, Dec. 17, in class.


Dec. 10, 2009:
Language Arts: Practice spelling words (in your planner) for test tomorrow.
Complete p. 44 & 45 in the Practice workbook.
Make sure your sledding story is the best it can possibly be! Read it out 
loud to someone in your family to make sure it has an easy to understand 
sequence and plenty of details.
Research your Scholastic News question.

Math: Workbook, p. 39--all problems.

Relgion: Complete p. 323. Remember to bring an unwrapped gift to Mass on 
Friday (if you want to).

Science (for Mrs. Schmid's class): Please write a letter in reply to the 
letter to the editor I read you today. 
1. Your letter will respond to the letter written by Frances Reinsburrow who 
said that the D.O.T. should NOT build underpasses for animals on I-140.
2. Reinsburrow said that there is not enough evidence that the underpasses 
work.
3. She also said  that the D.O.T. needs to spend the money on other projects.
4. What do you think?
5. Make sure that your letter refers to Ms. Reinsburrow's letter.
6. Agree or disagree with her letter by stating what you believe.
7. Give evidence for what you believe from the handout I gave you. 
8. Due on Tuesday, Dec. 15th.

Dec. 9, 2009:
Continue practicing your spelling words.
Complete pages 41 & 42 in the Practice workbook.

Dec. 3, 2009:
Language Arts: Practice spelling words (in your planner)--spelling test 
tomorrow.
Research answer to your chosen Scholastic News article. Remember some of the 
grammar rules: capitolize the beginning of each sentence, use end punctuation 
(make it visible so that I can see it), put title of the magazine article in 
quotation marks, and write in complete sentences (re-write your question as a 
statement). Write neatly in cursive.
Continue adding interesting details to your sledding story. Remember that it 
must have a conflict and resolution and character traits.

Math: Workbook pg. 44 odds and 22-25.

Science: For Mrs. Schmid's class--Write a summary of the "Animal Crossing" 
newspaper article discussed today in class. The summary should be 3-5 
sentences identifying important general information supported by some 
specific information.

Dec. 2, 2009:
Language Arts: Define these robust words on index cards:
inspecting   taut   untangled   rumpled   lurked   resounded   reluctant

Brainstorm ideas for your story. Your prompt is: Your town has had its first 
day of snow and you are going sledding. You grab your sled and...
Remeber to include a conflict and resolution in your story. Also include 
character traits (describe the characters by their actions and words).
Now write for 20 minutes at least. Make sure you have an interesting 
beginning. You can type this on the computer and send it to my e-mail or save 
it in your electronic locker or print it out from the computer. You may also 
handwrite it (in cursive). Remember to skip every other line.

Math: Workbook, p. 43, odds only and #22, 23 and 25 of the same page. 

Dec. 1, 2009:
Math: Complete evens on pg. 42 of the workbook.

Language Arts: Read pgs. 188-202 in the reading textbook. Answer questions on 
pg. 203 in complete sentences.

Nov. 30, 2009:
Science: Write a short summary (3-5 sentences) of the article, "Animal 
Crossings". We have already read the article in class but if you have to 
review it and have trouble with some of the words or concepts then look them 
up in the dictionary or ask your parents for help. If you can not find your 
copy of the article it is from this morning's "Star News" at the bottom of 
the first page.

Math: Workbook p. 42, odds only.

Language Arts: Practice the spelling words from p. 27 in your workbook. On 
that same page write all the spelling words in order (it will just be the 
first 20). Also complete the questions on p. 28.
Grammar: Workbook p. 10 & 11.

Mrs. Fex always gave her students a homework pass for a night when the 
students and their families needed to spend more time together. In 
recognition of Mrs. Fex's great legacy to our school, Mrs. D. has given all

Language Arts: Spelling test tomorrow. This is a review of previous spelling 
words and so should not be too difficult.
Practice your lines in your play.

Math: Workbook p. 33, evens only. Show your checking!
Complete Math Superstars.

Science: Summarize the handout I gave you called, "Rock Around The Rock 
Cycle." Write the summary in neat handwriting on the back of the handout. It 
should be about 4 sentence long. (Remember, a summary is a brief "wrap-up" of 
what hwas written or said.)
If you haven't finished your science test do that tonight.

Religion: Complete the unit test on pages 77-80. Use the notes you took today 
during class to help you answer the questions.
Remember, Mass is tomorrow so come to school looking neat in clean uniforms.


Nov. 5, 2009: 
Language Arts: Spelling test tomorrow!
Find 6 examples of adverbs in a book you are reading. Write down the 
sentences you find them in. Identify the word the adverb modifies/describes 
(Remember, an adverb is a word that describes a verb, an adjective, or 
another adverb. Some adverbs tell when or where something happens.)

Math: Workbook, pg. 33, odds only. Show your checking. Continue to work on 
Math Superstars.

Science: My class--continue to work on science take-home and open-book test. 
Turn it in BY September 12th.
Mrs. Schmid's class: Begin science take-home test. This test is due on Nov. 
13th. You can use your science textbook and workbook. Do as much as you can 
tonight.

Religion: Remember we have Mass tomorrow. Bring a canned good and dress in a 
clean, fresh uniform.

Math workbook. p. 29. Do as many as you can in 20 minutes. Don't work on it 
any longer than that.

Language Arts: Writing--Continue/improve and complete one of your stories 
(the Black Widow Spider or the Witch). Either write it in your best cursive 
or type it on the computer. If it is from the computer print it out or e-mail 
it to me (bbilger@stmarkcatholicschool.org). You may illustrate your story to 
help you think of details to add to the story.
Complete pages 17, 18 and 20 in the Reading Practice workbook (not page 19).
Continue being a word detective.
Study for the spelling test (words on page 21 in the practice workbook).

Science: Mrs. Schmid's class only--p. A61, answer questions 1-4 in complete 
sentences. For #5 just give the letter and the correct word for the answer.

Religion: Remember we are serving at Mass tomorrow. Invite your parents to 
join us. Wear clean, fresh uniforms and make sure your hair is brushed.

Oct. 28, 2009:
Math: Workbook, p. 28-all.

Language Arts: Write a story about the black widow spider that you 
brainstormed about today in class. You may type it or write in your very 
neatest handwriting. Write for at least 30 minutes. Make a flow chart to 
organize your ideas before you start to write. Remember:
1. Create an interesting beginning!
2. Capitolize the first sentence in a sentence, indent the beginning of each 
paragraph and use proper punctuation (especially remember to use end 
marks!!!!!).
3. Give lots of information (you have to create a setting, plot, and 
characters).
  a. use metaphors (it is raining cats and dogs) and similes (she is as sweet 
as a glazed doughnut)
  b. give lots of descriptions (dazzling details)
  c. use adjectives, adverbs, and interjections (Oh my!)
  d. you may research to include factual information
4. Write in complete sentences.
5. Correctly identify names of magazines and books if you are including them 
in the story.
6. Organize your thoughts. MAKE A FLOW CHART BEFORE YOU START WRITING.
7. Wrap your story up  in the last paragraph--do leave the reader hanging.
8. Do not say, this was just a dream or to be continued.

Choose your favorite article. Write a summary following the procedures 
outlined in your handout on on the announcements page.
Write neatly, in correct sentences, and tell me everything you can about the 
article you have chosen. 

Science: Workbook, p. WB33 & WB34.

Math: Work on the Math Superstars handout for at least 10 minutes.

Religion: Illustrate at least 2 pages of the "Ways to Pray" booklet. We will 
finish it tomorrow in class. If you want to use your watercolors and want to 
do that in class, then illustrate all four pages at home and paint in school.

Language Arts: Define the robust/vocabulary words on index cards. They are:

Math: Study for the Math Test on Chap-ter 2 by reviewing the study guide you 
completed last night. Pay special attention to any of the areas you had 
trouble with on the study guide or on today's classwork. Ask your parents or 
a friend or an older sibling to help you by creating problems similar to the 
problems on your study guide.

Religion: Read pages 66-69. 


Oct. 19, 2009
Language Arts: Put the spelling words from your pre-test or from the handout 
I gave you in alphabet order. Make sure you turn the page over and 
alphabetize all 25 words AND remember that the word is "toil" rhymes with 
oil, not "toll" even though the handout says toll (news flash--the handout 
says boyhooe instead of boyhood). You can also go to: 
http://www.spellingcity.com/lakewood4/ and go to lesson 2 and click on games. 
That will take you to the same handout that I gave you (the incorrect word is 
toll there so just change it to toil).
Also complete pgs. 11, 12, & 13 of the Practice workbook. You can use your 
book to help with the plot events on pg. 13. (Remember that vocabulary words 
are the robust words--if you have to look up any of them make sure you write 
their definitions on index cards (that will be Tuesday night's homework).

Science: Continue to work on the bird beak booklet. Mrs. Schmid's class--your 
booklet will be due NEXT Thursday (Oct. 22). My class's is still due on the 
19th. Search for birds whose beaks look and function like 4-5 of these tools:
   pliers, spoon (or colander), tweezers, chopsticks, clothespin, straw, 
   nail, or spear.

Religion: Mass tomorrow--bring a canned good. 
Read pages 64 & 65 in your Religion book. Complete the activity on page 65.

Language Arts: 1. Continue practicing your spelling words posted on Oct. 12. 
Review those words and the words from Oct. 7 for a game of hangman tomorrow.
2. Complete the grammar handout. Remember--no commas before the word and.
3. Start typing your summary of the story, "Mighty Jackie the Strike-Out 
Queen". Make the chages that I or Ms. Reba suggested. Type for at least 10 
minutes. You will turn the completed, edited version in to me on Friday. (Add 
lots of detail like the detail that was in Ann, Mary Grace and Elly's 
stories.)
4. Complete your summary of the Scholastic News article--remember to use the 
handout (Key Words) I gave you to prepare the summary and then the handout I 
gave you at the beginning of school to actually write the summary. Your 
summary must be organized, full of information and follow correct grammar 
conventions.

Science: Continue researching 4-5 birds who have beaks shaped like the tools 
from our experiment like week (pliers, spoon, tweezers, chopsticks, 
clothespin). Be prepared to draw the beak and describe its function for the 
booklet.

Science: Look at the bottom of pg. WB31. You are to find a book or an on-line 
source (try doing an image search for bird beaks) with pictures of birds. 
Identify real birds that have beaks like the tools you used in this 
investigation. Make a booklet describing each beak type and how birds use it 
to gather and eat food. Include your own pictures (you draw them) of the 
beaks and of the matching foods each beak can best gather and eat. Due: Oct. 
19th. The tools we used are: pliers, chopsticks (or two pencils), forceps (or 
tweezors), spoon, and clothespins.
(Just look at bird beaks now--I will give the directions for making the book 
later).

Language Arts: Complete the grammar handout, p. 9.
Write down all the vocabulary words that have the closed syllable pattern 
(remember that is when a syllable breaks between 2 consonants, the first 
syllable is usally pronounced with a short syllable sound).
Spelling words (including robust words) are:

times, 7 times, 8 times and 9 times. Have your parents sign paper or an index 
card telling me that you played for 20 minutes. if you get bored go to 
another math site on my links page and practice more mulitiplication of the 
6, 7, 8, and 9s.

Language Arts: Study for the Winn-Dixe test, chapters 16-20.
Define the rest of the vocabulary words on index cards.
Read the entire Scholastic News. Answer questions from your handout--wait to 
do your research. Here are the questions: 
1. What is the name of your favorite article? (Put titles of magazine 
articles in quotation marks).
2. What is that article about?
3. Why do you like it—tell me something more than you think it is interesting—
why do you think it is interesting?
4. What else would you like to know about the subject of your favorite 
article?
5. Where will you look for the answer to your question? And how will you 
search for it? 
Remember: indent the beginning ofparagraphs, all sentences begin with a 
capitol letter, spell article correctly, and use end punctuation!

Language Arts: Read chapters 19 & 20 in "Because of Winn-Dixie".

will have a spelling test on FRIDAY.

Religion: Choose two or three lines from the handout, Psalm 104, to add to

Get parent's signature on graded work.

Language Arts: Put spelling words in ABC order. Remember to write them out 
somwhere else before you put them in order so that you can make sure you 
don't forget any of the words. These are the words:

Read chapter 17 in "Because of Winn-Dixie".

your answers with your parents.

Science: Complete the animal need's poster.

Remember that tomorrow is Picture Day so wear your cleanest, neatest uniform. 
We will take photos AFTER recess so bring a brush to comb down your hair.
Bring in new supplies if you need them (pencils and dry erase markers 
particularly).
Scholastic Book orders are due on the 23rd.

Go through your book bag, homework folder and planner and check to see if you 
have any graded work that should be signed by your papernts. If so, have them 
sign it and then turn it in tomorrow.

Language Arts: Study for the spelling test. You have a handout with the words 
and they are posted on Sept. 15's homework listing.
Study for the Winn-Dixie chapters 11-15 test.

Math: Workbook p. 9--all.

Science: Workbook p. 23. Posters due next week.

Social Studies: poster due for 4 students.

Remember no Mass tomorrow.

Tonight is Curriculum Night so homework will be light--
Language Arts: Read Chapter 10 in "Because of Winn-Dixie". Practice spelling 
words for test tomorrow (especially embarrassed and dessert). Words are under 
yesterday's homework in case you lost your sheet.

Math: Go to the VERY BOTTOM of my links page. Click on to the link called 
Virtual Manipulatives and then click on the money game. (This is easier than 
the way I told you to go today in class). You can choose any of the three 
games to play. Play for at least 10 minutes.

Remeber Mass is tomorrow--bring in canned goods and wear a neat and clean 
uniform.

Create index cards for the last 10 spelling words. On one side of the card 
will be one of the last 10 spelling words. On the other side you will write 
the corresponding definition. Use the cards like flash cards to practice 
learning the words.

but you must try to figure out the answers based on what we completed in 
class.

Science: Choose 3 animals for your possible research topic. See announcement

brushes), markers, colored pencils, dry erase board with eraser and markers, 
folders, notebook paper, binder, scissors and glue sticks....

Study all spelling words (look at dates August 25 & 26 if you can't find the 
handout with all the words).
Write each word out and illustrate what that word means on a sheet of paper 
with proper heading. Write in cursive.

Welcome back to school!
Language Arts: Put words from the spelling pre-test (on the handout) in ABC 
order including the extra credit word pique.

Go to my Webpage and click on links--spend about ten minutes at one of the 
math links or go to sadlier.com and click on the family page under math.

Create a symbol for an idea promoting positive choices--like a key 
for "education is the "key" to a good life". Make sure you can explain why 
you chose the symbol that you did.
