Many parents and students already know me--I was the art teacher for 1 1/2
years at St. Mark and by my good fortune I have been blessed to return as a
fourth grade classroom teacher.
For those who don't know me, here is some information. I am married to a
professor of education at the Watson School of Education at UNCW. We have
two daughters, Claire (at UNCG) and Sara at Hoggard High. I am originally
from Charlotte--my last job there was as director of education for a museum.
I love to dance, travel and cook.
I have taught students from grades Pre K-8th and up through college--in
fact, I sometimes teach education majors at the university in
Educational Psychology and Art for Elementary Classrooms. This is my fourth
year teaching fourth grade and I love it! I hold NC teaching licenses in
Elementary Education (K-6), Art and as a Curriculum Specialist and as a
Principal.
I graduated in 1978 with a BA in Art History from UNC-CH. I received my
graduate degree in 1986 from the Bank Street College of Education and
Parsons School of Design in New York City. I have a Master's in Educational
Leadership with a Visual Arts Focus.
The mission for the class this year is for the students to learn to be
responsible for their own learning and their own behavior and to grow closer
to God.
We have lots of class discussions so be prepared to hold your own in class.
That means come to school with your homework completed, the materials read
and thought about, and paper and pencil for taking notes.
I will encourgage you to think critically and creatively about the class
material. This helps you to make more connections to the information in your
brain (so that you can retrieve it more easily) and deepen your
understanding of the material. When you leave 4th grade you will be well
positioned to meet the challenges of 5th grade.
Specifically, we will concentrate on developing writing skills including
sentence and paragraph skills. We will be practicing personal writing,
expository writing, persuasive writing, imaginative writing, narrative
writing and descriptive writing.
In math students will learn to multiply and divide 3-digit numbers and work
with fractions.
You will switch classes for social studies and science. I will teach both
classes science and Mrs. Schmid will teach social studies. We will do lots of
hands on exploration in science so get ready to think, question, apply
information and have FUN! One important aspect of the science curriculum is
to understand the scientific process. To do that we will conduct experiments
in class. During the spring semester in science class students will present
a science fair project.
One of the ways we make learning come alive is through our day long trip to
Raleigh which will be do in the spring. Mrs. Schmid will have done a good job
of preparing you for understanding state government by then. We will visit
the State Legislature Building, the State Capitol Building, and the
North Carolina Museum of History and the North Carolina Science Museum. If we
are lucky we might even be allowed to visit the Governor's Mansion!
Mrs. Schmid and I are working together to provide similar classroom
experiences for both classes in language arts, science, social studies,
math, and religion.
