Accelerated Reader is a program that couples students' natural interest in technology with reading practice to increase their skills in both areas. Students read books and take short computer-based tests to check their comprehension. The program tracks their progress (in both quality and quantity) and awards points for successful completion of these tasks. Two years ago, in response to hardware and network problems related to the size of the program, the PTO invested in an upgrade with two major benefits; more tests for students and parental access of student progress.Back to Top
At St. Pat's teachers use Accelerated Reader to enhance classroom reading instruction. Every teacher uses a different approach and will have different requirements and expectations. Your teacher will inform you of when and how he or she will use A/R in the classroom.Back to Top

By now your teachers should have notified families and students about how the A/R program works in their classrooms. If you have any questions, ask them. They will provide reminders about how to use the program correctly, talk to students about picking a "just right book", and discuss goals. Mrs. Lehmuller can help with any problems you have navigating the web site, or helping your child identify books that are good choices for him or her.Back to Top
Is the program the same as last year?
No, it has changed in that there are no longer prizes awarded by PTO for points earned. Teachers found that the program was most successful when it was used as part of the reading curriculum rather than as extrinsically rewarded enrichment. There will be some awards, but you will see them later in the year and they be be rewards for participation.Back to Top
