School Libraries meet two objectives: first, to support and enhance
curriculum and instruction by providing access to materials selected
especially for that purpose; second, to provide opportunities for
instruction in the North Carolina Curriculum for Information Skills. Each
class visits weekly for stories and activities that support the curriculum
goals, aligned not only with the information skills goals, but usually
integrated with a content area goal for each grade level.
Kindergartners have learned the St. Pat's technique for keeping books on the
shelves where they belong. Ask them about the "Old Switch-a-roo! They now
select books in small groups, creating a more personal and authentic library
experience. In class we learn the parts of the book as we read stories and
reflect on them in our libary journals.
First graders are continue to improve their reading skills by selecting "just
right" books. In class we read and reflect in our journals, trying to write
at least one sentence about each story.
Second graders are learning the conventions of non-fiction books during a
trip around the world. When they are done, they will be able to use non-
fiction books to answer questions inside and outside the classroom.
Third graders have begun a unit on readers' theater. They are practicing and
will perform two fairy tales that they are reading in their classrooms.
Fourth graders continue to learn using independent learning activities. I
have never seen a group more focused. We did take a break to learn about the
Dewey Decimal System--because it's used in libraries all over the world, the
children know this is a real life skill.
Fifth graders are well into their "Rules and Tools" unit. We have learned
the rule "LOCATE", and have begun to "EVALUATE". Ask your child what he
knows.
