          May

Friends are like flowers, beautiful flowers,
Friends are like flowers in the garden of life.
Flowers need sunshine, flowers need rain,
              Flowers need loving care.
Helping each other in sunshine and rain,
We will be friends in the garden of life!

Our year in Kindergarten is coming to a close. And, what a year it has
been! The girls and boys in K-A are terrific and have become good friends.
They have learned so much and grown together as a family. It has been a joy
being their teacher and helping them on their journey.

We eagerly await the arrival of our
Painted Lady butterflies from their chrysalises.
We've been watching them as they ate and grew!
They are all inside their pupas and it won't be long
before they emerge. Then, we will let them go in Mary's
garden. What a great science project!

This is a special month to honor Mary. We will learn how to pray the
rosary. Mary's Son, Jesus, is our role model and we will practice treating
others as He did. We're proud to be disciples of Jesus and spread the Good
News!

Our last letters and sounds in reading are: Vv, Zz, Yy, Qq. We know all 26
letters and sounds and use them every day in our reading and writing and
spelling. There is a writing frenzy going on in K-A. The children have so
much fun writing creative sentences and stories. They love to read their
stories to each other. The new popcorn words are: look, out, off, take.
This month we will work on prepositions and our reading fluency continues to
improve.

In math we're getting good at using calculators and we sometimes use them to
check our addition and subtraction answers. We're practicing double and
triple digit numbers and exploring solid shapes: cube, sphere, pyramid,
cylinder, etc. We've learned how to divide items equally and we can count
many different ways to 75!

Spring science is great! We will plant sunflower seeds and watch them grow.
Have fun reading one of our favorite books, "Sunflower Seeds" by Eve Bunting,
and plant some sunflower seeds at your house. We will also paint large
flowers in our K-A hallway soon. Stop by to see them.

Our kindergarten year will come to a beautiful close with the graduation
prayer service. Each child will receive a diploma for his or her hard work
and wonderful progress. The 'smarties' of K-A truly deserve this special
honor.

We wish you all a happy May and a safe, relaxing, and fun summer!
