               FIRST GRADE NEWSLETTER
JANUARY 2010
Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a fun and restful holiday.

The new year brings a lot of exciting challenges in the first grade. The
children seem to grow an inch over the break! It is so wonderful to see the
achievement since the Fall. We hope you are noticing the great strides your
child is making and remember to tell them how wonderful they truly are!

We want to thank you very much for the Christmas gifts and cards! We enjoyed
all the goodies and scrip cards!

READING- We continue reading in the Big Book, Our Neighborhood At Work. The
children will learn about the many different types of jobs in our community
and explore the idea, “what do I want to be when I grow up!” We will begin to
learn the different spellings for the long vowel sounds, example: long o
spelled o/, _ow as in snow, o_e, oa_, and oe. We will do a writing dictation
activity almost every day as we practice using our sound card spellings with
short and long vowel sounds. Our language arts book continues to practice
punctuation and capitalization, as we learn to write friendly letters and
thank you notes. We have a classroom post office set up and the children will
be encouraged to send notes to one another.

MATH- Our Math Meeting continues to strengthen skills taught in our math
lessons. We continue our unit on Place Value by identifying 2-digit numbers
and reciting a number which is 10 more and 10 less. Our next unit will be
Geometry!

RELIGION- The Magi have visited Baby Jesus! We will continue our lessons on The
Our Father prayer, and prepare for our Catholic Schools Week celebration!

Science- Let it snow! We will observe winter by making fun experiments! I only
hope we may experience some real snow! Also be watching for an invitation to
our teddy bears, as we celebrate “Janubeary” during Catholic Schools Week!
