Welcome 8th Graders

The Study of Geography, North Carolina History

and the History of the United States

The 8th grade curriculum focuses on North Carolina’s geography and the state’s history relative to the development of the United States. The year will begin with an examination of the geography of our state and country and continue with a study about our native inhabitants. We will build on early history by studying European exploration and colonization. The Revolutionary War, the birth of the United States and North Carolina governments, the Civil War, and finally Reconstruction will be periods that are included in our exploration of growth and development. Reading historical novels as a class will enhance the study of our state's and nation's history. Examining some aspects of the social, political and economic life of the 20th century will conclude the course.

Homework assignments, projects, worksheets, and notes will be posted on the social studies website on a weekly basis.

Each student’s performance will be evaluated through tests, quizzes, projects, class work and homework. Notebooks are expected to be organized and should include two dividers, separating notes and homework. All students will begin each quarter with a class work and homework average of “100.” A five point deduction will be recorded for missing materials and/or assignments and a three point deduction will be recorded for incomplete assignments.
