FAQFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT KINDERGARTEN
What time does school START and when is DISMISSAL time? Students need to be in their classroom ready to start the day at 8:30 a.m. when the morning bell rings. (The school doors open at 8:05 a.m. to allow for staggered entry at morning drop off.) First Dismissal-3:00 p.m. Students in Kindergarten, First and Second Grades are dismissed at 3:00 if they are SINGLE riders OR if they have siblings or car pool with families in these grade levels. Second Dissmissal-3:10 p.m. Students in Kindergarten that have siblings in Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades OR if they car pool with families in these grades are dismissed at 3:10 p.m. Third Dismisssal-3:15 Any children riding with students in Middle School can be picked up at 3:15 p.m. What about SNACK TIME and LUNCH TIME? Students will bring their OWN snack EVERY DAY. Kindergartners are asked to bring a healthy snack each day, even half days. A healthy would be fruit, a granola bar, a yogurt, peanut butter crakers, cheese etc. No sweets please. We ask that you pack your child's snack separate from their lunch box. In our KB routine we place our snacks INSIDE our locker on the shelf so we can easily get it at snacktime. We set our lunchboxes ON TOP of the lockers and leave them there until we line up for lunch. We do not have to "open and close" our lunch boxes to get our snacks and this avoids spilling or losing the food packed in our lunchboxes. If your child needs a SPOON, STRAW, NAPKIN etc. for their LUNCHES you need to pack these items in the lunchbox. We DO NOT have these supplies in the lunchroom. Does Kindergarten have SPECIAL classes? Yes. Kindergarten has Physical EDucation (PE), Spanish, Art, Music, Library and Prayer/Book Buddies. Students need to wear their PE Uniform on the assigned days we have PE. Do students have regular BATHROOM BREAKS? Kindergarten has regular bathroom breaks using the HALLWAY bathrooms. We also have a bathroom attached to the main classroom that a child may use if they need to use the bathroom during class time. Please note-Kindergarten children DO NOT HAVE TO WEAR BELTS as part of their school uniform ANY day. Do the Kindergartners have a REST TIME? Yes, we have a daily rest time each afternoon. Children bring a towel to lay on. (NO MATS or NO PILLOWS - rest towels need to fit into the locker and into their book bags.) We play soft music and have a quiet time. Some children just need a little peaceful time to rest their busy bodies and brains. Other children do fall asleep for a short power nap. Rest towels will be sent home at the end of the week to be washed. We ask that children bring their towels back to school with them at the beginning of each new week. Does my child have their own LOCKER? What kind of BACK PACK should we get? In Kindergarten and First Grade we SHARE a locker with a classmate. The bookbag you purchase should be big enough to fit school books and folders, snack, lunchbox and their rest towels. Since we share a locker we work on lessons of taking turns, sharing space, respecting each others property and cooperative teamwork. One child is assigned the LEFT-SIDE of the locker-the other child the RIGHT- SIDE. It gets tricky when we have bulky winter coats...but by that time the children have had lots of practice in locker teamwork. Do the students have CENTER TIME? We use a variety of centers to incorporate and enrich the academic skills we teach in our core curriculum programs. We also use centers for small group cooperative learning activities. One of our centers may be the computer station. We have three computers in the classroom to use. Do the Kindergartners go to MASS? Kindergarten will go to Mass with the rest of the school on HOLY DAYS. Kindergarten will begin attending Friday Mass on September 18, 2009. We also visit the Chapel, Santuary and Grotto at various unscheduled times throughout the year. Does Kindergarten have RECESS or PLAYTIME outside? Yes, we play on the playground before lunch everyday. We also have another playground time during the day, depending on the schedule of the day. What if my child is is SICK or ABSENT? Please call the School Office at 865-5750 to report if your child is sick and will not be coming to school. If it is an unexpected last minute change, call the school office 865-5750 to verify your request. The office will let us know. DO NOT leave this type of message on our Room Extension # 103 - we will not be checking messages we receive during the school day until car pool is over at the end of the day. What if my child gets SICK at school? It is VERY IMPORTANT to keep accurate, updated phone numbers, contact numbers and cell phone numbers on file in the school office and with the teachers. If your child needs you we want to be able to get in touch with you. If your child is not feeling well we will send them to the to the HEALTH ROOM. If they need a band-aid, ice bag or monitoring the office staff/health room volunteer will assist them. If your child has a fever or has vomited you will be called to pick your child up. All medication is dispensed in the Health Room. Medication logs are kept on file in the Health Room. Does Kindergarten B celebrate BIRTHDAYS? Yes! A birthday is a very special day to a child. We will sing to them and you are welcome to bring a birthday treat to share but please check with us ahead of time to schedule. If we have children with food allergies, we will notify you of foods that may not be sent in. (If your child has a food allergy please make us aware of the specific foods they need to avoid.) Birthday treats can be sent in with your child the morning of the day they will celebrate at school, or you are welcome to come in at the time we decide to share this special time. We have 20 children. Does Kindergarten B have SHOW AND TELL? KB does NOT have a scheduled SHOW AND TELL time. We may ask children to bring in items to share as an enrichment to a unit of study or activity throughout the year. KB children will bring their RED FOLDER home and back to school EVERYDAY...even if it is empty. We use this RED FOLDER as a daily communication between the KB Classroom and Home. Please check your child's RED FOLDER everyday to see their papers and go over the work they have done each day. We also may have notes from the teachers or information we want all parents to read. You may send notes to us by placing your message in the RED FOLDER and sending it to school with your child. Empty your child's RED FOLDER every night and return it to school the next day. RED FOLDERS are a big part of our Daily KB Routine. The WEDNESDAY MAILER is the LARGE ENVELOPE sent home with your child every Wednesday. It contains a weekly school newsletter and information from the school office. You will be sent notices about school activities and functions going on at St. Raphael's. The WEDNESDAY MAILER is a wealth of information about the school...lots to read because we have lots going on! Take your papers and materials out of your WEDNESDAY MAILER and read all of the information enclosed to stay informed. You can send back forms or information to the school office through the WEDNESDAY MAILER...just like you send classroom information to the teachers through the RED FOLDERS. Return the WEDNESDAY MAILER ENVELOPE back to school the NEXT DAY so we will have it on hand and be able to send you new information each week. How can I CONTACT THE TEACHERS? You can call the school office at 865-5750 and leave a message for the teachers. If you have an immediate need (like a change in carpool or pick- up) it is best to call directly to the school office and they will make sure we get the message. You can leave a VOICE MAIL for the teachers by calling the main school number followed by the teacher's extension number 103 when prompted...865- 5750 Ext. 103. We check our messages after carpool and before school starts. You can send a note to the teachers through your child's RED FOLDER any day. You can e-mail the teachers at aweaver@saintraphael.org. Since we are actively involved with the children throughout the day we may not respond to e-mails as quickly as other avenues. |
