In the classroom:
Reading- We are wrapping up our unit on kindness. Then, we will begin Unit Three. The theme for this unit is called” Look Again”. This unit will allow the students to deepen their understanding of the relationship between an animal and the ecosystem of which it is a part. The skills we will be working on include recognizing a topic sentence, drawing conclusions, subject-verb agreement, and classifying and categorizing information. January will be a busy month in 2B!!
Social Studies- The next unit we will be discussing is called We the People. We will be learning about our country, voting, the White House, and the duties of our President. We are also learning the qualifications of being President as well as the character traits a good President should have.
Math- We are wrapping up our addition facts; I was so happy with the children’s progress this past quarter. I can tell they have really been practicing! Next week, we are starting Chapter 5. We will be learning how to subtract two-digit numbers. We will practice how to regroup and make fact families.
Religion- The unit we are working on is titled “All are Welcome”. This unit will help us prepare for Reconciliation which is February 6th! The words we will be learning in class are original sin, mortal sin, venial sin, confession, contrition, and examination of conscience. This is a very important time for your child and I am sure they will be sharing what we are discussing in class with you.
Language Arts- This month, our focus is on verbs. We will also continue with how to write a good paragraph. This week, the children will write and illustrate how to make a snowman. We will be using the time and order words that we have learned to help us!!!
Handwriting- We are starting cursive!!! Soon, the students will have cursive name tags on their desks. I will send home in their red folders a cursive alphabet so you have one to help them at home as well. I know how excited the children are to finally write in cursive!!
Parent Information
- Our good character trait for the month of January is Perseverance.
- Please make sure that your child brings a coat to school when it is cold outside! If your child is not dressed appropriately, they will have to stay inside during recess and PE.
- Starting next week, the children will be expected to write at least five sentences in their Reading Journals instead of three.
- Next week, Buddy our 2B Bear will be coming home with the children. The children are asked to write about what they do at home while Buddy is visiting. This will need to be done in the third person. An example and directions will be sent home. When your child has Buddy, they will not need to do their Spelling homework.
