In the classroom:
Reading- Next week, we will start our next Reading Unit which is about kindness. We will be learning how important being kind to others is. The children have discussed how it feels when someone is kind to them as well as how we feel inside when we ourselves are kind to others. During this unit the skills we will be working on are sequencing, that commas are used during the greeting and closing of a letter, sentence elaboration, making inferences, and reviewing our time and order words. We will also be studying nouns, nouns naming more than one, and nouns that should begin with a capital letter. We are very busy in 2B!!
Math- We are practicing our time and money skills. The children will be learning to tell time in five minute intervals, to the half hour, and be introduced to elapsed time. We continue to practice counting money, and making the same amount using different coins. I encourage you to practice these new skills at home, count by fives on the clock face, have your child what time it will be in twenty minutes, have them tell you how many minutes until….., also have them count spare change. There are so many teachable moments with these difficult concepts and that will help reinforce the skills being done in the classroom. I want to remind you that our Math Program has a great website. It is www.sadlier-oxford.com. All you have to do is click on mathematics and then second grade. This will help reinforce the skills we are working on at school.
Science- We are learning the roles of a scientist. This week, your children got to put together pieces of a magazine to make a picture. The job of a scientist is like a puzzle and they have to put the pieces together to figure out what kind of object they have found. We will also be identifying the parts of a plant, a flower, and reviewing the life cycle of a plant. We will be observing what plants need to survive and doing a celery experiment. This will be a fun unit!!
Handwriting- During the next month, we will be completing our manuscript unit. Once I feel the students are ready, we will start cursive!!!
Religion- We are continuing to discuss the many ways that Jesus Loves Us. During the month of December we will prepare for the birth of Jesus. We will soon be practicing for our Christmas Play which will be on December 11th. After the New Year, we will be focusing on the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
