We are using an inquiry based curriculum now in all grades, K-8. This type of
learning focuses on building understanding through hands-on explorations and
applications, such as projects or problems, as opposed to teacher lecture and
drill. Students will be asked to talk and discuss findings. The lessons are
guided by the teacher so that the major concept is learned, then student do
additional work to use that concept and make sure the concept is deeply
understood. Big picture concepts are emphasized with the details supporting
the big picture. Students in 8th grade must understand slope, equations for
lines and how to interpret rate of change over time. For this, students spend
a lot of time developing graphs based upon actual data they collect and then
time is spent to see the shape of the graph and what the shape indicates.
From there, students learn how to make predictions from that graph, to look
for patterns, and eventually, make an equation to match the graph and make
prediction using the equation. Data might be collected from doing jumping
jacks for a two-minute interval or building bridges from paper that increase
in length or thickness which must support weight. Each unit involves
activities that are engaging and questioning that drives thinking.
