Hello! DC Virgo Middle School has been my home-away-from-home for the last
ten years. I have taught many things here, and many students, too! I am
currently excited to coordinate the AVID program and teach the AVID elective
classes! I am also looking forward to my 7th and 8th grade Language Arts
classes. It is going to be a great year!
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is an
international program that New Hanover County has implemented over the last
four years.
The AVID goal is to engage students and families from underrepresented
populations in the preparation for, application to, and successful completion
of a college or university education.
We, here at DC Virgo, offer AVID in the 7th and 8th grades. Students work on
organizational skills, notetaking skills, study skills and test taking skills
to prepare them for the advanced coursework they will need for high school and
college requirements. We also support academics with Tutorials twice a week
to assist students with raising their achievement levels. AVID will also
provide students with opportunities to interact with professionals in the
community to learn about careers, colleges and universities.
