Mr. T's Book Suggestions

Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer ~ This teen story of love, family, and super-powered beings has been a runaway hit at Wakefield Middle and across the nation.  Seventeen-year-old Bella moves to Washington state to live with her dad, where she meets the mysterious Cullen family and falls in love with the beautiful Edward.  Edward has feelings for Bella too, but unfortunately it's because he's a blood-sucking vampire!  Read this novel and the rest of the series (Eclipse, New Moon, and Midnight Dawn) to see how these characters can form a relationship while protecting themselves from vicious vampire armies, a tribe of werewolves, and -- of course -- telling Dad about their secret!  (Written by Mr. T)

Al Capone Does My Shirts, by Gennifer Choldenko ~ Young Moose and his family move to 1930's Alcatraz Island, where his dad serves as a guard at the infamous prison.  Moose just wants to be a regular kid, but is soon finds his life intertwined with the pretty but bossy daughter of the warden, Pepper; his own special-needs sister, and even a questionable correspondence with the convicted killer, Al Capone, himself!  (Written by Mr. T)

Running Out of Time, by Margaret Peterson Haddix ~ Visiting historic sites such as Old Salem or Colonial Williamsburg can be a fun way to see history portrayed by actors and actresses.  What if they weren't acting?  In her first young adult novel, Haddix imagines that the citizens of 1840's Clifton aren't aware that the year is actually 1996 and that their every moves are being watched by curious tourists!  No one is the wiser until children start dying of diptheria.  Then, Jessie's mother, who is a nurse living in Clifton but is in on the secret, asks Jessie to escape into 1990's America to find help.  Imagine seeing a telephone, a pair of jeans, or a car for the first time!  Jessie must overcome her fears in order to save her friends.  (Written by Mr. T)

The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan ~ The ancient Greek gods are alive and well ... and living at the top of the Empire State Building!  Percy (his nickname for Perseus) Jackson always seems to be getting into trouble, or maybe trouble is always looking for him.  Percy discovers that Zeus believes he's stolen the master copy of Zeus's lightning bolt.  As the child of a major Greek god (but he doesn't know which one), Percy must find the bolt and with help from his friends Annabeth (also a demigod) and Grover (a goat-legged satyr) get to the bottom of a plot to overthrow the gods and Mt. Olympus itself!  (Written by Mr. T)

Eragon, by Christopher Paolini ~ What would you do if you found a mysterious blue "rock" in a deadly forest?  Eragon soon finds out that his discovery is not a rock, but a dragon egg.  It hatches for him and then he sets forth on a quest to avenge his uncle's death.  With the empire on his tail, who knows what could happen next!  (Written by Alex W.)
