3rd & 4th periods' Great Charity Race:
3rd pd: 33,813 points 4th pd: 35,208 points
Monday, pds. 2, 5, & 6: #104: What do you look for in a video game? When establishing your criteria, consider such things as the game's graphics, sound, speed, difficulty, the type of game you prefer, what you do in the game, etc.)
Monday, pds 3 & 4: #104: What do you look for in a charity? This is the first step toward your charity evaluation that will be due next Tuesday. When establishing your criteria, consider what is truly important to your heart. Do you want to help kids (sick, homeless, disabled, etc.)? Do you want to help animals (lost pets, unwanted pets, endangered animals, specific animals, etc.)? Is it important to you where you charity works (local, statewide, national, global, specific country, etc.)? Does it matter how much of their collected money goes directly to their cause (100%, 97%, 95%, etc.)?
Note from Mr. T: I missed seeing you today. I'm doing everything I can to get better and plan on being there tomorrow. I hope things went well with Mr. Hatley and you got a good model for writing an evaluative body paragraph. Notice how this time, all of your facts and details are about one criteria, not all three.
2nd, 5th, & 6th periods: If you'd like to visit the website I planned on using today, it's www.freearcade.com. Play some of these games and see how they match up to your criteria from Monday night's homework. Is there one that meets all of your criteria?
3rd & 4th periods: Feel free to begin looking for charities that meet your three criteria. I suggest first using sites such as www.guidestar.org or www.charitynavigator.org. I've also reserved the computers in the library tomorrow so you can research. Mr. T will have your Barnes & Noble schedules tomorrow.
Tuesday: 1) Finish circle map and 4-square plan (#106 & #107) about the qualities of a good friend. Your 4-square plan should focus on one of your good friends and how they meet three important traits (honesty, humor, similar interests to you, etc.). 2) Use #105 (today's classwork) as a model to write a 5-8 sentence paragraph showing how this friend displays at least 3 examples of one trait. That is, if you said that Chris is funny, start your paragraph by telling me that humor is important, then give me at least 3 examples of times that Chris was funny. Remember to use a topic sentence, a value word, and a good closing sentence.
Wednesday, pds. 2, 5, & 6: 1) Complete a circle map and begin a 4-square plan about what makes a good TV show. This is the planning for your evaluative essay which will be due next Tuesday. You want your details and examples from your TV show to be as specific as possible; can you do this from memory or do you need to watch an episode? 2) Review vocabulary & QOW.
Wednesday, pds. 3 & 4: 1) Research your charity; how well does it meet your criteria? As you take notes about your charity, be sure to focus on your circle map and 4-square plan. This is not a report; it is an evaluation of how well this charity meets your three criteria. You may need to do more than just online research; e-mail them, call them, interview someone. This will get you the best information.
Thursday:
Students from 3rd & 4th pds will be wrapping gifts at Barnes & Noble (Triangle Town Center) tonight from 6-10 to collect tips for their winning charity. Please stop by and see us!
Friday, pds. 2, 5, & 6: 1) Final evaluative letter due Tuesday ~ typed or in pen. This is your 4-paragraph letter to a network describing your favorite TV show. Use the template, model, and rubric from class as well as all of our recent notes (value words, tranistion words, model paragraphs, etc.). 2) Finish #117 with QOW & sent's? Some classes had enough time to begin these in class. 3) Get interim and PCU #3 signed.
Friday, pds. 3 & 4: 1) Final evaluative essay due Tuesday ~ typed or in pen. This is your 5-paragraph essay defending how your charity meets your three criteria. Use the rubric from class as well as all of our recent notes (value words, tranistion words, model paragraphs, etc.). 2) Finish #117 with QOW & sent's? You don't have to name the Christmas carol; that part's just for fun. 3) Get interim and PCU #3 signed.
