Standard Course of Study

This web page serves as a curriculum terminal from which you can travel to specific goals and objectives based on discipline and grade level. This service provides a convenient way for teachers, administrators, and parents to verify the instructional objectives of the Standard Course of Study at a given grade and subject area.  You may also wish to view the NC Course of Study Graduation Requirements which go into effect for 9th graders entering for the first time in 2000-01.

Please read and be aware of DPI's Copyright Policy  regarding Internet-based information as you explore the Standard Course of Study and related instructional resources.  Also read the Foreword, and Introduction to the Standard Course of Study, to understand the history and thinking behind the current versions. Information regarding challenging high school programs can be found in The North Carolina Academic Scholars Program.

The Balanced Curriculum:

  • A Guiding Document for Scheduling and Implementation of the NC Standard Course of Study at the Elementary Level
    (pdf 1.4mb, ppt 828k)
This guiding document for elementary school focuses on the importance and value of delivering a well-rounded education which includes all areas of the Standard Course of Study.

  • Middle School Level Surveys
Middle School Teachers of all areas and School-Based Administrators are asked to complete the following surveys. This information will be used as the Middle School Balanced Curriculum Committee develops a guiding document that will assist schools with implementing a balanced curriculum. It is anticipated that this document will be available for the 2005-2006 school year.

Operating Procedures Manual Enrollment of High School Intellectually Gifted and Mature Students in Community (pdf, 384k)
These procedures have been prepared cooperatively by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to facilitate effective planning for cooperative programs between community colleges and high schools in North Carolina. These procedures replace previous procedures for Huskins, concurrent enrollment, and intellectually gifted students programs. This document is effective with the planning cycle for cooperative programs between community colleges and high schools for the 2004-2005 high school and college academic year.
