How are local teams selected? Selection of local teams is at the discretion of the school, or library
group, and is totally flexible. Team selection is not to exceed one team
per
each division per building, unless there are at least 75 students in a
division. Teams may have members from different grade levels. Suggestions
for team selection include:
-a mini classic within your school district
-written quizzes
-consult school and community media specialists to assist in
design for local selection
-consult with are E.S.U. staff development personnel or
county superintendent for suggestions or assistance
-oral questions for team competition with students able to
score individual points. Top scorers could comprise a team.
Class I Rural School Districts
Class I rural schools are encouraged to enter teams. Should a school
district not have four students for a division team they may combine with
another class I school to form teams.

state competition. The team from each division with the second greatest

each division during the semifinal competition.
What are the County procedures? County Contest Procedures
1. There will be 5 rounds of 10 questions in each round.
2. Each of ten questions will be read only once with 20 seconds allowed
after
each question for the team to write their responses (30 seconds for Div. I).
Teams should confer QUIETLY so other teams do not hear answers.
3. At the end of each round, three minutes will be allowed for the teams to
ask for questions repeated and/or responses changed.
4. Spelling doesn't have to be correct, just close enough for the scorers to
guess what is meant.
5. Answer sheets will be collected so that the scorers may begin scoring
while the next round begins.
6. The validity of team answers will be at the discretion of the teams until
the top team emerges.
7. The team with the most correct answers at the end of 5 rounds will
advance
to the state semifinal rounds. In the event of a tie, additional rounds of 5
questions each will be administered to the teams until the top team emerges.
8. No erasures will be allowed. If a team wishes to change an answer, they
must cross out the first answer and write the new answer.
9. Coaches will have 30 seconds maximum between rounds after the answer
sheets are collected to substitute a team member and/or coach their team.
10. Coaches may look at the response sheets at the end of the competition,
but they must be turned back into the judge and may not leave the
competition
area.
Who writes the questions? Solicitation of Questions from Students, Staff, and Community
Encourage your students staff and the community to submit questions. This
encourages reading as a family and community affair. Questions will become
the property of the Reading Classic Committee. The more questions submitted
from your district, the greater likelihood that students will be familiar
with some of the questions at the county and state competitions.
All questions must be submitted with information on the question form. This
includes the individual's name, school, the question clearly stated, and the
answer clearly documented. Please fill out the form completely as this
enables those preparing questions to do a better job verifying answers.
Please limit questions to 25 words or less.
1. Write only on one side of a form.
2. Please avoid author, and title questions. Higher level questions
concerning plot, theme, etc. are appreciated. Avoid multiple interpretation
questions. Verify questions with specific answers.
3. Questions will be eliminated if the form is not completed fully. List the
answer page numbers for verification, when page numbers are available.
4. Please verify and edit questions to be submitted.
For example:
Division I-Puss in Boots, which of the sons got to keep Puss?
answer: the youngest
Division II-Class Clown by Johanna Hurwitz, what bet did Cricket make with
Lucas?
answer: that he couldn't keep quiet for a whole year
Division III-The Brave, why didn't Sonny win the boxing title?
