The school year is flying by as we get ready for the holiday season. Here is
what we are working on:
In math class we are tackling fractions. We have learned how to simplify
fractions, find equivalent fractions, and compare fractions. This has
included learning lots of new vocabulary such as factors, prime, composite,
numerator, and denominator. Next we will take on adding and subtracting
fractions with like and unlike denominators.
In social studies class the students are excited to be studying the
Revolutionary War. We started the unit by experiencing what it was like to
pay taxes with our "money" (M&Ms). This led to learning about all of the
things the king did that upset the colonists. We will study the strengths of
the British and Colonial armies, major battles of the Revolution and the
Declaration of Independence.
In my reading group, we have moved into our second reading book and the new
Language Arts book. We already got to read a story about pirates and the
famous poem "Casey at the Bat." Next we will read a story about slavery and
Harriet Tubman before ending the book with Tom Sawyer.
Mrs. Kment has been coming to our classroom once a month to teach guidance.
So far she is focusing on bullying. We appreciate her making us think about
how it feels to be bullied.
