Schuyler Middle School Students Learn about Haiti Earthquake Disaster
One person can make a difference. On Thursday, January 12th, O’Neill resident Dr. Jay Allison visited Mark Brady’s seventh grade social studies classes. Dr. Allison shared his experiences as a member of a medical recovery team that traveled to Haiti. He arrived in Haiti shortly after the devastating 7.0 earthquake on January 12, 2010.
Dr. Allison served in Haiti with doctors and nurses from Nebraska and surrounding states. Since the earthquake, he has visited Haiti numerous times to continue working with earthquake victims. During those visits he has helped patients living with cholera, tuberculosis, HIV, AIDS, and other life-threatening diseases. The medical team distributed medicine and provided nutritional supplements.
The students were able to see pictures from Dr. Allison’s trip and hear stories about the Haitians affected by the earthquake. As Dr. Allison was in Haiti, he was overwhelmed by the suffering, starvation and poverty he witnessed. Dr. Allison shared an amazing story of being on a team of people who were able to help a four-pound, four month old baby live. They used an eyedropper to feed the baby and help it gain weight. After telling this story, he encouraged the students that, although you cannot help everyone, you can still help some. In that way, you can make a difference.
By now, your students and your household have hopefully settled into a routine again. It is always difficult to come back from Christmas Break and begin the second semester. With the recent nice weather, settling into a routine has been a challenge. But, it has been a smooth beginning to the second semester and students seem to be adjusting to the school routine. As always, we strive, as a school, to keep you informed about important activities and events that are up coming on our school calendar.
