Students in grade 7 are finishing up work on the novel Among the Hidden. The students will have a research project and character essay finished by the end of this week and due in Monday, Dec. 10.
Next week we will begin a writing conventions mini-unit covering things such as capitalization, punctuation, apostrophe, and quotation marks. As well as some spelling and words that are commonly confused while writing. There will be a short quiz at the end of the week.
The rest of the time we have until Christmas will be used to start studying narratives/short stories. We will continue that unit after Christmas as well.

Student are reading their independent books with a small assignment due Oct. 15th. There assignment is an ABC chart that summarizes their novel/book.
Student will also have a quiz early next week on poetry terms. Some will write Tuesday, others Wednesday, depending on if they are going on the Brother Brennan field trip or not. The quiz is short and sweet and I feel confident that most kids know the terms by now. For review, there is a power point presentation and some flashcards available on the documents button to the left of the screen. There is also a rap video that reviews terms under the Language Help Video section.

The poetry includes that in the text and some extra selections from Robert Frost and E.J. Pratt as well as some song lyrics. Students will be asked to write several poems throughout the year and also to learn several poetry terms.

Welcome students and parents!
We will begin our first couple of classes in Language Arts class this year with a little paragraph writing and then we will start to explore our text book, Literacy 7. We will begin with Unit 1: Step Up. In simplest terms, this unit is about how and when people choose to stand up for what they believe in.
The link to the online student text is now available through the Helpful Links banner, found to the left of the screen. Make sure to copy the access code 49651c1f from the textbook link and paste it when prompted to access the site.
You will find the Literacy text and some other extra features, including worksheets. Also, you will notice that the selections are available in audio files and also MP3. This means that students can transfer their selections to their digital music players and ipods allowing them to listen on the move, in the car, in waiting rooms, etc.
I know grade seven can be a little daunting. I encourage all parents to attend curriculum night as it will help explain what your child will be learning and help you prepare to help them through the next year of school. As for the grade seven language arts course, it is very engaging, with lots of learning and lots of fun. Also, please check out the link on the left "Grade 7 Parents". It is a quick overview of things we will cover in Language Arts this year. I love teaching this course and I hope your children will love it too.
