FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
Are GCS Athletics and the Recreation Department the same? The GCS Athletic Department and the Recreation Department are not the same, but we do work very closely. We share fields and facilities, purchase items that will be useful for both entities and continuially share information to give the children of the Town of Greenland the most comprehensive programs at every age. When does my child play "Middle School" sports? Most Junior High Sports are played by 7th and 8th graders, with a few exceptions: Field Hockey grades 5-8, Girls Soccer grades 6-8, Cross Country 6-8, and Elementary Track grades 4-5. What Jr. High sports are available at GCS? Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Boys and Girls Basketball, Baseball, Softball and Elemtary Track are available to the students at GCS. A ski club and intramural volleyball are also offered for Jr. High students. A dodgeball program is also offered during March and April for 2nd through 8th grade. What paperwork does my child need to participate? Upon entering 6th grade, every child who will be participating in a sport at the Junior High level is required to have a recent physical on file with the athletic department. At the beginning of each season, each participant will be required to fill out an Athletic Packet for their activity. This packet includes a Participation Memorandum, a Student/Parent Athletic Contract and a Medical Consent Form. These forms are filled out for every activity the student participates in. These forms are available online. A month or two before actual practices start, there are sign up sheets posted in the cafeteria. Signs are hung in the Jr. High wing, and announcements are made during the morning. Not signing up does not mean that your child can't participate, but it is very helpful when trying to dtermine team size and coaching resources that will be needed. It is highly recommended that when your child sees the sign up sheets or hears about the signups on the morning announcements, that they do make an effort to sign up if they are interested in participating. How do I know if a game/practice is cancelled due to inclement weather We make every effort NOT to cancel scheduled games. Using our website on a daily basis will help ensure you know about any changes/cancellations that occur during the school day. The website is updated daily, and all cancellation are made by 1:00 p.m. The new Flash Mail system helps the Athletic Department reach parents quickly with important announcements, including weather cancellations. Can my child participate in Ski Club and Basketball? If your child chooses to, they may participate in both. During January and February there are no Wednesday basketball games or practices. What protective equipment, if any, is required for my child to participate? Different sports have different protective requirements, along with their usual gear. Mouthguards are REQUIRED in soccer, field hockey and basketball. Cage style eyewear is also, required for field hockey, as shin guards are reuired for both field hockey and soccer. baseball and softball players are required to wear molded cleats (no metal spikes) and boys are required to wear a protective cup. Stamped Official Softball bats can only be used, and boys senior league baseball bats must be a drop 3 (-3). Where can I find directions to other schools and fields for "away" games. On the back of every team schedule there are directions to all of the schools/fields that particular team will playing at over the course of the season. All directions are also listed under the heading "School Directions" on the home page of the GCS Athletics Web Page. What if my child loses a uniform? Unfortunately, this does happen. After exhausting all of the places a lost uniform can be (locker room, lost and found, friends house, under laundry pile!), replacement costs for uniforms run from $25 (shorts, baseball/softball pants) to $50 (screen printed jerseys). Please see the Athletic Director for more information if you have a lost uniform. Report cards may be held in some instances until a uniform is returned or paid for. |
