Art Teacher K-8, September 2009
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to the 2009-10 school year. I
look forward to a new and exciting year in the art room. This year I am excited
to have an intern working with me from September to December. Nikki Ferola attends the Upper Valley Educators Institute and will be
teaching with me 4 days a week. We will be seeing all
GCS classes once a week for approximately 40-45 minutes. Some of the topics we
will explore are painting, ceramics, drawing, watercolor and printing. The art
program at Greenland Central School will enrich your children in many different
ways. The complexity of the projects will depend on the grade level. As the
children progress through the art program at our school they will acquire new
knowledge and skills, which are built upon skills obtained in previous grades.
By the time your children have graduated from Greenland Central School they
will have developed a wide variety of skills, which will hopefully build a
fondness, understanding, and appreciation for art in the world around them. I
truly enjoy the many aspects of teaching art here at GCS and hope that your
children will also enjoy the many things we will learn this year.
To the students and parents who are new to
our school, I would like to tell you a little about myself. I have been

Assessment:
1&2: Assessment is
based on class participation and ability to work at grade level.
3-5: Assessment of
student’s art experience is based upon effort, participation and creativity.
Behavior can also factor into the assessment process. Report cards will reflect
any of the following:
O- Outstanding
S-
Satisfactory
6-8: Assessment of Junior High artwork is based on
creativity, effort, and execution, as well as following the directions. Each
project has a predetermined set of criteria of which the artwork is graded. A
student/teacher assessment sheet is completed at the end of each project and
returned to the student. A weekly notation on student behavior during class is
also entered into the grade report.
Grading artwork is a difficult job and
sometimes thought of as a subjective conclusion. However, I do take into great
consideration a students effort as well as the above-mentioned factors in
determining a fair and objective grade.
