In second grade the purpose of homework is to have your child review the
content skills being taught during the year. Another goal is to allow
parents a first hand chance to observe their child's work habits,
organizational skills, and thought processes.
Second grade is the year when homework is first sent home as a regular
routine. Understanding that all families schedules are unique to them and
that everyone is busy, second grade is a good time to establish a routine at
home, a standard of expectations, and a place to store materials and sit to
get the homework done. This will pay off in future grades. Homework is
expected to be returned on time unless the child has been ill. Setting the
tone now is essential.
Because this is the first year when homework is sent home routinely a
schedule has been established to help facilitate your child remembering in
which subjects homework is assigned and when homework is due. Hence, the
following schedule.
Math: Homework is sent home on the first day of the week (usually Monday)
and due on the last day of the week (usually Friday). A goldenrod cover
sheet is always attached to the first page of the homework. The intent of
this page is to clarify the directions printed on each page, give helpful
hints about completing the page, and giving any special directions for the
week. Please read this page. It is dated so there will not be any confusion
as to which assignment is current. I also ask that parents sign their
child's homework so that I know they are aware of what is being currently
taught in math.
Homework is expected to be returned on time. If your child is ill an
extension will be allowed. You will be notified if a homework assignment is
late, incomplete, or not turned in. Your child will be expected to make up
any homework not turned in.
Language Arts:
Spelling lists are sent home on the first day of the week (usually Monday).
The spelling test is the last day of the week. A note of helpful hints about
helping your child study the words was sent home during the first few weeks
of the school year.
Spelling homework is usually sent homework on Tuesday, but if it is a
partial week of school that changes. It is usually due on Thursday, but
again partial weeks do change. The due date should have been written in at
the top of the assignment by your child. Please refer to the booklet that
was sent home at the beginning of school regarding the Fundations program
used this year.
Social Studies and Science: These assignments are assigned as appropriate
and not for all units of study. A explanation cover sheet for parents is
always sent home with the homework. Most of the time I ask that the parent
sign and return the bottom of the letter so I know that you are aware of the
assignment as soon as it has been assigned. Hopefully this elimenates
finding out about assignments just before the due date.
