Meet Mrs. Sommers

Hello!  MBethinRocker.jpgy name is Beth Sommers and this is my fifth year at Greenland Central School.  I did my student teaching here in 4th Grade with Mrs. Deely in 2004/2005, worked as a Title I Tutor in 2nd and 5th Grades the following year, and then taught 5th Grade with Mrs. Wark in 2006/2007.  For the past two years, I have been the
Curriculum Integration and Extended Learning Coordinator.  This position enables me to work with students and teachers at every grade level throughout the school.  My role includes researching, developing, and providing extended learning activities and programs for our students as well as creating the curriculum for and teaching the Life Skills Foods Classes. Each year has been exciting and memorable, as I have been very lucky to teach such wonderful students.  GCS is a great place where I love being around enthusiastic students, staff, parents, and community members.

I grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and attended Drexel University where I earned a B.S. in Foods and Nutrition.  I became a Registered Dietitian and worked in healthcare food service management.  As a Corporate Dietitian, I travelled throughout the country and taught employees how to computerize their food service operations.  After 10 years in Connecticut, where I earned a Master's degree in Public Health, my husband Joe and I relocated to Stratham, NH so he could start a software company.  Our son, Joey, was born shortly afterwards.  In 2005, I earned my K-8 teaching credential and this past year obtained my certification as a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher.  My educational background and career experiences have enabled me to play exciting roles in the development of our new Life Skills Foods Curriculum, our comprehensive health education program, and our school and district Wellness Teams.  I continue to be passionate about technology and want to do everything I can to leverage it for educational purposes, including piloting the innovative, web-based Renzulli Learning System during the 2009/2010 school year and pursuing grant opportunities to bring interactive videoconferencing to GCS students in every grade level.

When I'm not working, I love spending time with my husband of 22 years, Joe, and our son, Joey.  Joey is a 5th Grader at Portsmouth Christian Academy in Dover.  We are very proud of him!  We have three cats, Molly, Sophie, and JJ, and a golden retriever, Tucker.  I enjoy taking pictures, reading,  kayaking, playing tennis, and working on the computer.
