The National Geographic Bee was designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.
Timeline:
Grades 4-8 classrooms at GCS held their own Geography Bees in early January. The school-wide contest was held mid-January where one school winner was produced, 6th grader, Josh Barrett. Our runner-up was 5th grader Keaghan Vogel. The written qualifying test was then administered to Josh. In early March, the school was notified by mail that Josh qualified to represent us at the state level! The top 100 students (selected based on qualifying test scores) qualify to represent their schools and compete at the state level in April.

Our school winner, Josh Barrett, competed in an oral competition at the state level on April 3, 2009 in Keene along with 99 other competitors. Out of 100 students, Josh came in an astounding 15th place!! Wow!! We are so proud of you Josh!
State winners were invited to National Geographic headquarters May 19-20, 2009 to compete in the national finals for scholarships in the amount of $25,000, $15,000, and $10,000.
