The Scripps National Spelling Bee is an educational promotion sponsored by the E.W. Scripps Company in conjunction with over 270 newspapers around the world.  The purpose of the bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all of their lives.

The program takes place on two levels: local and national.  Our local sponsor is the NH Union Leader.

The National Spelling Bee was begun in 1925 and is open to students attending public, private, parochial, charter, virtual, and home schools.  The 2009 National Spelling Bee will involve more 11 million students at the local level and over 270 national finalists.

Timeline Summary:
GCS Grades 4-8 classrooms held their own Spelling  Bees before February 1. Our school-level winner, 8th grader Julia Comeau, was determined later in February. Our runner-up was 6th grader Matt Durant.  Mr. Fogarty, parent of 4th grader Andrew, did a wonderful job as our moderator for the school-wide competition!

GCS sent one representative, 8th grader Julia Comeau, to our regional competition held on Saturday, March 7 at the Portsmouth Elks Lodge.

Two finalists from each of NH's 9 regions competed at the  state level held at Memorial High School in Manchester on March 21, 2009 at 10 am.
