FIRST Lego League (FLL) is an exciting and fun global robotics program that was designed to ignite an enthusiasm for discovery, science, and technology in kids ages 9 - 14.  FLL is a competition that revolves around making Lego robots to complete many tasks.  Each year, the contest focuses on a different topic related to the sciences.  Every challenge within the competition then revolves around that theme.  The students work out solutions to the various problems and then meet for the regional tournaments to share their knowledge and compare their ideas.

There are four main facets to a competition.  First, students are interviewed by a panel of judges asking them about their teamwork.  Secondly, the students must demonstrate that the robot they built is designed appropriately for the task given.  Third, the students must do an independent project that relates to the topic and give a short presentation on the investigative problem solving they completed.  Finally, the students must use the robots they designed to complete a set of tasks on a playing field.

FLL is the result of a partnership between FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and The Lego Group.  In 1998, FIRST Founder Dean Kamen and the Lego Group joined forces to create FLL.  FLL uses Lego Mindstorms kits to build autonomous robots.
