Classroom guidance activities for readiness - grade 3 are conducted by Ms.
Laroche. Classroom guidance activities for grades 4 & 5 are conducted by
Mrs. Flaherty.
Readiness:
We will be watching short movies, reading stories, and doing role plays to
learn about the following topics each week:
1. Feelings (mad, sad, angry, happy)
2. Making and Keeping Friends
3. Everybody’s Different (respecting differences)
4. I Can Do It! Building Self-Confidence (taking one step at a time to
learn to do something new)
5. How to Ask for Things -
a. look the person in the eye
b. say their name
c. ask and say “please”
6. Boris Bear Remembers His Manners (a fun review of good
manners on the bus, in the classroom, on the playground,
and in the cafeteria)
Grade 1:
The first five lessons will focus on our I Care Rules:
1. We listen to each other.
2. Hands are for helping, not hurting.
3. We use I-Care Language.
4. We Care about each other’s feelings.
5. We are responsible for what we say and do.
During our 6th lesson, we will learn about good touches and bad touches. We
will watch a video with two puppets named Mark and Baby Bear, who are very
silly. They will explain the difference between good touches and bad touches.
They will explain that the private parts of your body are covered by your
bathing suit, and that no one should touch you there. If someone tries to
touch you there, you need to:
1. Tell them to STOP!
2. Get away.
3. Tell a grown up.
If the grown up doesn’t believe you, you need to keep telling grown ups until
someone does believe you and helps you. If the grown up tells you it’s a
secret, that’s a bad secret. You do not have to keep a bad secret that makes
you feel bad inside. You should tell mom or dad whenever someone tells you
something that makes you feel scared or confused. The puppets make it fun to
learn about a very sensitive subject. If you would like to preview the video
before it is shown to the class, please call me or send me a note and I would
be glad to lend it to you.
Grade 2:
The lessons will focus on getting along with others. Each time I visit the
class, we will listen to a story, sing a song, and do some role playing (or
“acting”) on a different topic. The lessons will include the following:
Lesson 1 - Teasing
Lesson 2 - Bullying
Lesson 3 - Poor Sportsmanship
Lesson 4 - Intolerance
Lesson 5 - Fighting
Lesson 6 - Selfishness
Grade 3:
The first two lessons will focus on “stranger danger”. The lessons will be
taken from the Got 2 B Safe! Think Smart and Take Charge! program. Please
visit www.missingkids.com for more safety information that you can use with
your children on this important topic.
During the last four lessons we will be using the laptop computers to explore
Paws In Jobland. This is a website that allows children to find out about
careers in an interactive manner. To learn more:

2. In the Parent Sign In section, click on the Site ID tab.

concept of "courage" and what they can do to help stop bullying behavior.
We will come up with action plans to stop bullying.
The students will also have the opportunity to engage in an interactive
Powerpoint presentation and review child-related websites on bullying.
Grade 5:
Once again, this year (2008/2009) Guidance is a bit different for 5th grade.
Mrs. Flaherty will be going into the 5th grade Enrichment classes to talk
about different topics. (This is because Health is no longer offered). Our
first lesson will be about Internet Safety. The next lesson will introduce
the topic of Peer Pressure. Other topics will include: Conflict Resolution,
Personal success and transitions to the Middle School. These lessons are
