What should my child bring to school?

Your child should bring a pencil box and two laminated pocket folders that
are labeled with their name. The pencil box and one folder will be kept in
school, and the other pocket folder will be used as a home/school folder.
Corrected papers and homework assignments will be sent home in this folder
everyday, and notes for the teacher and homework assignments should be
returned to school everyday in this folder.

Is there snack time every day?

Yes. We have about 10 to 15 minutes for snack every day. Children should
bring in a healthy snack, such as fruit, vegetables, crackers and cheese,
yogurt, etc. They should also bring in a water or juice box.

Is there Show and Tell?

Each day while we have snack one table per day will get to share something.
Some children bring in things from home to talk about and share with the
children. Some children have "tell" shares, where they might tell about
something fun or interesting they have done. This is a great way for
children to bring their interests into the classroom and learn to speak in
front of a group of children.

What will my child learn in second grade?

Children continue building their reading skills, which is why it is so
important for each child to read every single night as part of their
routine. In first grade children are introduced to reading, writing, math
and problem-solving skills, and in second grade we begin to practice and
master these skills. In essence, their academic foundation is being
strengthened and their skills become more advanced in second grade.

How can I help my child succeed in school?

You can help your child by making sure all notices are read, homework is done
and returned on time, and making sure if you have any questions or concerns
that you contact me right away so we can address them immediately. Also a
good night sleep and good breakfast will help them be more alert during the
school day.

Can I help out in the classroom?

At Open House in September, I always put up a sign-up sheet for helpers. I
need a room mother who will be responsible to contacting parents at party
time, and I have centers on Friday that require help.

What is your behavior policy?

The school wide behavior rules are the I Care Rules.
1. We listen to each other.
2. Hands are for helping, not hurting.
3. We use I Care language.
4. We care about each other's feelings.
5. We are responsible for what we say and do.
If one of these rules is broken, first I give a reminder. If the behavior
continues, I give a warning. If the behavior still continues, the child has
to hop their frog from green to yellow. The frog may return to green before
the end of the day if the child turns their behavior around. However, if the
I Care Rules continue to be broken, the frog will hop from yellow to my
desk, the red zone. This means I will call home or write a note home. I also
give out I Care Coupons sporadically when I see the I Care Rules being
followed. If a child collects 10 coupons, once a week they can cash them in
for a special reward. Of course, if they hop their frog, they give back a
coupon, and if it hops onto my desk (the red zone), they lose all of their
coupons. Everyday we begin a fresh new day, and there are always
oppportunities to collect more I Care Coupons.
