Step number 7 of the Research Steps (see this web site)
covers "taking notes." The proceedure for taking notes is further
broken down into substeps.
Locate a source of information useful for your topic. |
Fill out a colored work-cited card for that source. On the card, write the work-cited number in the bottom left corner (w1). Write the type of source in the bottom right corner (encyclopedia). Write the required information in the center of the card. |
Set up a white note card with the number from the work-cited card in the bottom left corner (w1). Write the page number from the source in the bottom right corner. Put a number in the upper right corner to desigante the number of the note card. |
Read a paragraph and determine the main idea. Is it something that will fit in your focus? (If not, then skip the next two steps.) |
On the note card, write keywords that will help you to remember the main idea or any key pieces of information. Write only one idea per card. Do not write complete sentences. |
Set up another white note card. (See substep C.) |
Continue with steps D-F until you have finished that source. |
Be sure to record on the work-cited card the pages of the chapters you used. |
