Visual Arts Curricular Goals- Mr. Tselios
Broad Goal: The art program will provide each student at Pelham Elementary
School with the foundation of developing appropriate knowledge of the elements
and principles of design. The visual arts department seeks to have students:
• Begin to develop an environment that emphasizes observance and thus
become more visually literate
• Produce two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms of art in various mediums
• Gain an understanding of art as a means of self-expression and a form of
communication
• Develop a basic understanding of art vocabulary and design concepts
• Develop an understanding of and the ability to work with the basic art
elements (texture, color, line, value, shape, form, and space) and the key art
principles (balance, pattern, unity, contrast, emphasis, rhythm, and movement)
• Gain a fundamental understanding of how the artist can use certain
materials, techniques, and process that in students own works
• Gain appreciation of our own rich artistic culture within America, as well
as the exposure to various world art forms
• Develop an appreciation of art as a tangible means of self-expression and
communication
• Gain an understanding for personal creativity, as well as a respect
for the varying perspectives and abilities of others
Grade Level Curricular Goals

and relate to diverse themes being taught in other classes, as well as current
events. Understanding this, each respective grade level goal will be:
