Step 1 - Parent Letter
ANCIENT EGYPT RESEARCH PAPER
Dear Parents,
In Social Studies class the students will be exploring an area of
interest in Ancient Egypt. As part of this unit the students will be
writing a research paper in order to expand their knowledge on this
topic and learn valuable research methods. The process used to
construct the report is covered in class, whereas the information
gathering is primarily done outside the classroom. There will be
several steps involved and a due date will be set for each one.
These dates are important as points will be deducted if the time
frames are not met.
• Materials needed:
• 75 lined index cards
• 5 sources of information. At least 2 printed sources: book,
encyclopedia, or magazine.
• A container to keep the index cards in (a zip-lock baggie
works great).
The report is equal to a test grade; therefore, reminding your child
that a due date is approaching would be extremely helpful. Located
on the back is the grading process, which will be used to evaluate
the Egypt research paper and the due dates.
Any assistance you can give your child with this report will be
greatly appreciated. Feel free to contact me with any questions or
concerns by; letter, phone (635-2321), or email
(cgariepy@pelhamsd.org).
Thank you for your support,
Mrs. Gariepy

Step 4 - outline
STEP 4 Organizing the Information
Now that you've recorded the information you've found on the topic, you need
to organize this information. Staying focused and organized will help you in
the writing process of the research paper.
1. Review your note cards. This will show you the information you have to
work with. It should also alert you if you need to find more information to
meet the requirements of a three page typed paper in size 12 font.
2. Go through your note cards and look for similarities among the notes.
Group the note cards on similar topics together. Use the similarities as a
main topic in your outline. Each of these main topics should become different
paragraphs in your research paper.
3. Within each main topic there will be additional note cards that will
go into subgroups that are more general .
4. Set aside note cards that don’t fit under any heading. Don’t throw
them away since they might be used when you begin the actual writing of your
paper.
5. You may find that you need additional information.
ORGANIZE YOUR OUTLINE
Using an outline will serve several purposes, mostly to help summarize
the notes taken while researching. Outlines are somewhat like skeletons; the
bare bones of what the muscle and meat of the paper will be about. They are
lists that show the arrangement of details.
Use your outline as your “map” to guide you in your research writing.
The following is an example of how to set up your outline. Your outline will
look different depending on the information you gathered.

STEP 5 & 6
WRITING THE RESEARCH PAPER
Welcome to the final step of your Egypt research paper. You have been working
hard gathering information, now it’s time to organize the facts into a paper
that flows and is enjoyable for the reader. Be very careful to write it in
your own words.
The complete research paper will be at least FIVE TYPED pages, double-spaced
with size 12 font and Times New Roman style. No pictures or graphics. Do NOT
use the word: I, me, or myself, in a research paper.
PAGE ONE
Cover Sheet:
1. Title
2. Your name
3. Section
4. Date
PAGES TWO, THREE & FOUR
Introduction:
The first paragraph will be your introduction, which will contain two things.
1. Your topic sentence. Remember this sentence should say something
interesting, surprising, questioning, or dramatic about the topic you have
chosen to research.
2. State your reason for choosing this subject to research.
a. Give important background definitions.
b. Use interesting or surprising facts.
The Body:
The body is the longest part of the paper and contains most of the information
obtained from your outline and note cards. Remember to use paragraphs for each
main idea and each sentence in the paragraph must be directly related to that
main idea.
The Conclusion:
The final paragraph, or conclusion, should tie all the important points
together, giving a clear understanding of your research paper. Review the
important points you have made. Restate in different words your topic sentence.
