Homework

                               First Grade

Dear Parents,
Here is an outline of our homework schedule. Your help with and support of
homework assignments is greatly appreciated. Returning homework assignments
in a timely manner is important. It builds responsibility and good work
habits in your children. Please use the blue folder given to your child on
the first day of school.

      Monday.....Vocabulary and Spelling
High frequency words from our Scott Foresman Reading series will be sent
home. Please ask your child to practice the vocabulary words daily. It will
help with fluency and comprehension. Family Times (in mid-October)is also
sent home on Monday along with a Spelling list. Your child should write the
spelling words three times each until mastered.

     Tuesday.....Book-in-a-Bag
Your child will choose a book from our classroom library. You may read with
or to them. A Reading Log will accompany the book. Please sign the log and
help your child fill out the comment section and return it with the bag
provided.

     Wednesday.....Math
Homework will be based on skills already introduced in class. On
occasion, math manipulatives will be sent home with the paper. Games and
activities from our Investigations Mathematics Program will be sent home
with letters and directions. Please keep them handy and play often.

     Thursday.....Phonics Readers
These booklets accompany our reading anthology and reinforce phonics skills
of the week. In time, your child will be able to read these independently.
Please sign the front page and send it in on Friday. They will be returned for
your child to keep. Don't forget to practice spelling words for Friday's
test.

Homework for first graders should be no longer than 20 minutes per night.
Please let me know if your child encounters any difficulty.
