THANKSGIVING

This week we will start discussing the origins and traditions of our Thanksgiving Day. The students
will be making a Thanksgiving Pattern Placemat which coincides with our math unit on patterns and
our holiday. We will learn a new poem entitled "Five Little Turkeys", as we learn this we will act it out
in the classroom and create an art project that will come home for the holiday.

FRIENDSHIP

We have been talking about friendship, reading books on the subject, playing cooperative games and
decorating our classroom with friendship dolls made by each child. This will be an ongoing subject
throughout the year along with some wonderful role playing and problem solving lessons using
puppets and children.

FOUR WINDS

The afternoon students were treated to a lesson on coniferous trees and their cones. Katie Sheehan
did a wonderful job of organizing, collecting and teaching this lesson. The class was treated to a
puppet show, examined and compared different cones, played a matching game and took a walk
outside to observe the different kinds of coniferous trees around our school. A delicious snack of
pine nuts and tree shaped cookies finished off a great lesson. Thanks, Katie!

The morning class will have Four Winds on Friday November 20th. Please dress your child for the
weather.

SNOW

Your child will need snow gear at school when we finally get a measurable amount of snow on the
ground. We will go outside all through the winter and your child needs snow boots, snow pants,
winter coat, mittens, and hat. Without this gear they will have to stay on the blacktop area outside of
our classroom. Please do not forget to pack their sneakers, we don't wear boots in the classroom.

OCTOBER 28th

Yesterday and today kindergarten students took home a paper with their Parent-Teacher Conference
time. Please check your child's backpack for this information. Parents who have not turned their
paperwork in will be given the remaining time slots. Thank you on your flexibility regarding
conference times, I look forward to meeting with all of you.

OPEN HOUSE

This Thursday October 22nd is our Open House from 6:30-7:30. Come on in and check out your
child's
classroom and the rest of the school as well. Celebration Books starts at 5:30 and will be set up all
through the front hall. Hope to see you Thursday Night!

PARENT- TEACHER CONFERENCE

These will be held Thursday Nov. 5th and Friday Nov. 6th. I will be sending sign- up sheets home
tomorrow, please check your child's backpack. With thirty students it will be very hard to give
everyone
their first choice, so please be flexible and give me more than one option. We have twenty minutes to
speak and conferences are back to back, so please be on time. We will also set up a later date to
meet if
we have more to discuss at the end of twenty minutes. Thank you for your flexibility and patience, I
look forward to meeting with all of you.

HALLOWEEN

We will celebrate Halloween on Friday October 30th. Kindergarten students may BRING a costume to
change into for our Kindergarten Halloween Parade and party. We will have some games set up and
have
a good ole'Halloween time! If you would like to send in a special Halloween snack, please let me
know. I
could also use two parent volunteers to help that day.

OCTOBER 5TH

FALL

We will begin our study of the fall season this week. We are working on a graph of things that
happen in the fall to people, animals, insects and plants. After we make our list we will create a visual
representation with drawings and hang it in the hallway. We will make our next class book entitled "In
The Fall." We will learn about trees, their life cycle, and why their leaves turn colors. We will observe
leaves we gather and recreate them with watercolor paints. The fifth grade will visit us and we will
make leaf prints using tempera paint and go on a scavenger hunt.

In math we are working on attributes, using buttons, attribute blocks and now leaves. We are
creating graphs of all kinds( are you a boy or a girl, are you the oldest child in your family, etc.)

We will have a visit from The Plainfield Fire Dept. sometime in the next two weeks. This visit will
celebrate fire prevention week.
