What time does the school day start?

The bell rings outside for students to enter the building at 8:45 a.m. and
they are generally in the classroom by 8:50 a.m. There is always work
waiting for them, and a dialogue between students and their teachers begins.
The work day officially begins at 9:00 and students are considered tardy
after that time. Students who arrive late must report to the office before
proceeding to their classroom.

When does my child attend Physical Education classes?

Students enjoy Physical Education classes on Monday and Wednesday. They
should wear sneakers on those days. If your child is unable to participate
in physical education activities, you must send in a note to be passed on to
the school nurse and PE teachers.

What about other special classes?

Students enjoy Art class with Mrs. Proulx on Tuesday, Enrichment class with
Mrs. Barry on Thursday and Music with Mr. Graff on Friday. We will be
visiting the school library each Friday, as well.

What supplies does my child need for school?

Most of the things your child will need are already here at school. There
are a few extra items listed in the School Supply List for the start of the
year. It is helpful to keep them supplied with glue sticks. Although they
work wonderful, they don't last very long!

How much homework will my child receive?

Your child will be given an orange "homework folder" that will go back and
forth each day. Any homework that is assigned should be in that folder.
Completed homework should be returned to school in the same orange folder.
The EveryDay Math program suggests Home-Link assignment pages every now and
then. They do not go home on a specific day of the week, but rather when we
get to a certain lesson or unit. I do suggest that reading, math fact
practice, as well as Instant Word practice be done every night!

What time is recess and lunch?

Students are allowed a mid-morning snack in the classroom. They go to lunch
from 11:50 - 12:10, and enjoy a recess from 12:10 - 12:30. They are also
allowed an afternoon snack. I ask for your cooperation in providing healthy
snacks for your children (candy/soda is not allowed). Please provide spoons
or whatever else your child will need.

What happens when it is my child's birthday?

Many parents enjoy sending in a special treat on their child's birthday. We
are happy to celebrate your child's special day. I ask that you remain
mindful of food allergies, and keep snacks as healthy as possible. You may
drop off any treats in the office and the secretary will be happy to deliver
them to the classroom at an appropriate time. Please remember to supply
napkins, plates or spoons if required!

What about when my child is sick and misses out on his/her schoolwork?

If your child is absent from school and you are requesting homework, you
must provide the teacher with a 24 hour notice. My days are quite busy, and
I require a little bit of notice in order to gather your child's work. I
will leave your child's work in the office for pick up.

What about missed work due to a vacation?

Naturally, it is suggested that students take vacation during the regularly
scheduled school vacations. If you find that your child will be missing
school, you must provide at least 48 hours notice in order for me to gather
up his/her work. I do not generally send along each and every bit of work we
will be doing together in class, but rather those that I feel are most
important. Often I will send home a travel journal for your child to
complete while they are away. This written journal provides opportunities
for your child to practice spelling, grammar and writing skills.

What if my child has a problem at school or on the bus?

Always encourage your child to talk to me or another responsible adult about
any problems they may be having. If he/she feels uncomfortable for any
reason, please contact me as soon as possible. We do have a "Feeling Basket"
in the room which helps to generate conversations about problem solving
strategies, and names are never used in order to avoid embarassment.
Sometimes getting to the bottom of a problem requires the involvement of our
Guidance Counselor, School Principal or other individuals. GBS has a zero
tolerance policy for bullying, so be sure to let me know if the problem is
not corrected in a timely manner.

What if my child needs to be dismissed early?

Whenever a student is being dismissed early, or taking a different bus home,
I will require a note from parents. If your child has a regular dismissal
schedule such as, ED every Thursday for piano lessons or Brownies, you can
send one note in and I will keep it on file for the school year. You do not
have to write a note each week!
