How many snacks should I send in with my child?
You should send in 2 snacks a day for your child. We have snack mid-morning
and in the afternoon. I highly encourage healthy snacks. Please do not send
candy in with your child. Your child can
also bring in a water bottle with a pop up top to sip during the day. Please
be sure to send in a spoon if needed.
--------------------------------------
Does my child have homework every night?
Yes! Math Home Links go home 2-3 times a week. There is no set day for
math
homework. It depends upon the lessons that we work on in class that week.
Your child should be reading 10-20 minutes each night. Some of that reading
can be your child reading a "just right" book to you or you reading to your
child. Don't forget to ask questions about the story and try to re tell
parts of the story!
Ask your child to share what strategies they are using and if they can make
any connections to the story!
--------------------------------------
Should we practice WORD WALL WORDS?
YES! Please take some time each day to practice word wall words. Make a
memory game or flashcards out of them. We work with them all week and the
more exposure and practice will lead to mastery and confidence! Also,
remember to try to make other words from word wall words that have a word
family chunk. For example, if you know the word /can/ then you know /man/
and /pan/ and /tan/ ! Thanks for all you do!
--------------------------------------
What is a whisper phone?
Ask your child! They love them!
They are small phones that I have made of pvc pipes that help children "hear"
themselves while others cannot. Sometimes, when we are reading or writing
and trying to decode a word-it helps to hear it out loud as we s t r e t c h
out the sounds we hear! They are TOOLS and
not toys and the children love them!
--------------------------------------
How can I help my child become more secure with money?
There are so many fun ways to practice counting and exchanging money! One
fun way that I used to do with my daughters is to play store at home! Leave
a small bowl of coins on the kitchen table and "charge" for snacks!
Practice
making change too! An easy way to practice exchanging coins to a fewer
amount is to have your child first grab a handful of coins. Next, have your
child count the amount of coins. Next, ask your child to show you the same
amount of money but in fewer coins. Explain that you do not want a lot of
coins jingling in your pocket. After exchanging, count up the coins to
prove
that it is the same amount that he/she started with!
Children also like to play store! It may be fun to have some price tags on
certain items too! Have fun with it!
--------------------------------------
What is our golden rule?
"Treat others the way that you want to be treated"
--------------------------------------
Can I send in snack for my child's birthday?
Sure! Birthdays are a happy time! A small snack is fine. I do ask that it
is small and in individual
pieces.(no full cakes) Please drop off the snack at the office, with all
supplies needed,(spoons, napkins). The office will deliver it to our
class at an appropriate time.
--------------------------------------
What if.....
No question is a silly question! If you have a quick question -
please do not hesitate to e mail me and I will get back to you
as soon as I can. Due to my schedule, I cannot take phone calls during the
day. You can always call the office and they will leave me a note in my
mailbox. You can also write me a note and put it in your child's gold travel
folder. You can also email me at dmarinelli@windhamsd.org
--------------------------------------
Are there any rules I should be reviewing with my child?
Please remember to review our respect rules with your child. We respect
others in our class in many different ways: not talking when someone else
is,
raising our hand in class, being nice to our friends, respecting our class
supplies and other people's belonging, RESPECTING OTHER PEOPLE'S FEELINGS.
We try to remember to THINK before we speak. "Would we want someone to talk
to us that way?"
--------------------------------------
What if my child has a recess problem or trouble on the bus?
Golden Brook does not allow bullying or harrassment. If there is a bus
issue, it needs to be addressed immediately by a call to the office or your
child telling me so that I can report it. Bus issues are always handled
quickly and promptly. If there is a recess issue, your child should go to a
teacher on duty for help. He/she should also let me know if there is a
problem that they need help with. Sonetimes, other helpful staff such as
the
principal or guidance counselor will be consulted to help solve the
problem.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is a problem that has not been
dealt with promptly.
--------------------------------------
When does my child get new, colored math fact cards?
Children are quizzed periodically on their math facts. If I feel that they
need to study more- I will tell them to keep up the good work and I will
quiz
them again in a few days. Math facts will not start until 2nd quarter.
--------------------------------------
How often will my child recieve a new Instant Words list?
Parent volunteers are in at least once a week to assess each child's Instant
Word progress. New lists are sent home to learn as previous lists are
mastered. This is an additional program that we use to help your child.
Keep the old lists and study them often. The children are doing great! They
are so proud of themselves! They keep a current list in their desks to study
too!
--------------------------------------
Can my child play in the snow at recess?
Weather temperature permitting-YES! We go outside for recess. If your child
would like to be on the field or equipment area he/she MUST HAVE both boots
and snowpants. If not, your child can play on the hot top area. This rule is
strictly enforced at Golden Brook. Also, children are taught to respect
others by not kicking or throwing snow! There are so many other ways to
enjoy it!
--------------------------------------
Can parents volunteer?
Absolutely! You are part of our First Grade Family too! There will be times
available to sign up for at Open House and I always need parents at other
times too-just keep a lookout for notes going home or mentioned in our weekly
newsletters.
--------------------------------------
Is there anything that I can do at home?
Yes! Support, review and practice our class rules at home. Try to set up a
time and place for homework and some routines at home.
Ask specific questions at home like: "What did you learn in math today?"
Oh, and relax and enjoy every minute of every precious moment. It goes by so
fast and your child will grow up and become so much more confident this
year! It is amazing!
--------------------------------------
Can I send in a water bottle with my child?
Yes. Please make sure that it is a sports pop-up top (or a top that does not
have to be removed) and that your child's name is on it. Please only send
water.
