About The Teacher

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to visit my section on this site. I am the
new Computer Teacher at Allenstown Elementary School. The grades I teach are
3-5. I love the spontaneous enthusiasm of the younger students and the
expanding curiosity of the older ones. AES is a wonderful place to be as we
have the most supportive Principal, Assistant Principal and teachers.

My educational background consists of a B.S. in Art Education, M.Ed. in
Elementary Education, and a Certificate in Desktop Publishing. I have also
taken computer technology courses for teachers leading to certification in
Computer Education. One of my jobs entailed working as an Art Teacher, grades
K-5, but I was teaching close to 500 children in less than a half time
schedule! When teaching jobs were scarce, I worked for a number of years in
offices, including as an admin. asst./graphic designer to the president of a
company. Word processing and later desktop publishing were the skills I
performed and now are the very items that I am teaching the students.

Interests include fine arts and photography, with scenes of the Amish country,
PA and New England as the primary focus. I am also embarking upon writing &
illustrating children's stories on the side and am experimenting with
electronic illustration done on the computer.

The opportunity to have lived in various regions of the northeast has given me
a broad knowledge and appreciation of our country. Areas that I have lived
include: NY, Vermont, Amish Country - PA, and NH.

Mission For The Classes

The mission for teaching computer classes is to prepare students for our 21st
century of technology. It all starts with learning a couple of keys at a time
in keyboarding, and how to navigate on the computer desktop. These initial
skills start with 3rd graders and are added onto with each grade.

The three main categories I teach on the computer are: keyboarding, word
processing, and digital imaging. A fourth category would be desktop
publishing, which pertains to page layout and encompasses both word processing
and digital imaging. Another category is presentation, in which programs like
PowerPoint or iMovie can be used.

As one of the requirements by both the state and the district is for students
to start creating e-portfolios, I will have all students, grades 3-5, save
some of their work in these, which will be stored in our new Sakai storage
system online. An e-portfolio is an electronic means of storing computer
documents via ways such as: a computer folder, PowerPoint show, or a web site
designed by the student. Other names given to it are an electronic or digital
portfolio. These documents will show the student's proficiency of computer
programs and tools. The e-portfolio, containing these documents, can move
with the student from one grade level to the next, and into middle and high
school.
