Science Classroom Rules and Procedures

1.      Be on time, prepared, and ready to work – EVERYDAY!  This means in your seat, with all your materials on your desk, and ready to work when the bell rings.  Homework/labs are on your desk, stapled and ready to be collected.

  1. Make proper use of class time; work bell to bell.  When the bell rings, look to the front board for the objective, homework instructions and the “Do Now” assignment.  At the end of the period, continue working until the bell rings and I’ve dismissed you from class.
  2. Raise your hand.  Wait to be called on if you have a question or comment, or if you need to get out of your seat for any reason.
  3. Be respectful of other people and school property.  Keep your hands and rude comments to yourself.  In general, treat others the way you want to be treated.
  4. Use the lavatory on your own time.  If an emergency arises, ask permission at a practical time (not when I’m in the middle of teaching or the first/last 5 minutes of class).  Passes to the lav will be written in your agenda book which you MUST have with you at all times.
  5. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS- ESPECIALLY laboratory procedures and instructions concerning lab safety.  Failure to follow directions will result in lower grades.  In lab, it could result in serious injury, a ZERO on your lab grade, and severe disciplinary action.  Never touch any lab equipment or demonstration material without my OK, even if you have been allowed to use the equipment in the past.
  6. No food or drink of any kind.  For safety reasons as well as in accordance with school rules, there will be no eating or drinking (including water bottles) in the classroom.
  7. Fire drill and lockdown procedures:  Remain calm, quiet, and follow my directions.  During a fire drill, exit the classroom in an orderly fashion, remain as a group, and stay to the LEFT once outside.  Check in with me as I take attendance or you will be written up for cutting.

  1. The grading system is designed to work well for all students.  If you have trouble taking tests or quizzes remember that approximately 50% of your grade is based on labs and homework.  However if you choose not to hand in your work you will not pass.
  2. TESTS-
    1. Approximately 3-4 per marking period
    2. About 1-2 weeks advance notice of upcoming tests
    3. Usually include a short answer or essay section in addition to multiple choice questions
  3. QUIZZES-
    1. Approximately 1 per week
    2. Usually receive advance notice but occasionally pop quizzes are thrown to ensure that you spend time every night studying and completing homework
    3. Lowest quiz grade dropped
  4. NOTEBOOK
    1. Periodically, binders will be graded through collection or an open notebook quiz.
    2. Points are deducted for loose papers which are not permitted for use on the quiz.
    3. All work must be present, complete, corrected and in order.
  5. HOMEWORK-
    1. Homework will be assigned almost every night, including weekends to ensure students get the practice they need
    2. At least 2 low or missing HW grades are dropped each marking period (in college prep only)
    3. See “Homework/Labs” page of packet for more information regarding homework policies.
  6. LABS
    1. Approximately 5 per marking period in college prep (~10 per marking period for honors)
    2. Grades based upon your understanding of the activity, your ability to give detailed explanations and conclusions, as well as how you worked in the laboratory (following safety procedures, proper handling of materials and equipment, following directions, completion of the activity, etc.).

   HOMEWORK/LABS

1.  Homework and labs are due at the beginning of the period, when the bell rings.

a.  Points will be deducted if you are found to be finishing it during class.

b.  Head with name, date, period, assignment title and staple prior to class.

2.  Late homework is NOT accepted.

a.  You must have it with you in class and you must be ready to show it to me

when I ask for it.  This means you will not be

·    sent to your locker if you forgot it

·    allowed to show it to me the next day if you left it at home

·    allowed to show it to me even 5 minutes later because you may have  just

                  scrambled to finish it

            b.  EXCEPTION: If the homework answers are not discussed the day it is due,

you may hand in the assignment the next day for partial credit.

3.  Late labs ARE accepted as long as the corrected labs have not been passed back yet.

a.  Ten points are deducted for each day late.

i.    It is considered a day late if you do not hand in at the start of class.

b.  Very rarely some of the answers or results are discussed in class on the day the

lab is due.  In this case you will not be eligible to receive credit for those parts.

4.  Even if you are having difficulty with the assignment attempt all questions.

a.   A wrong answer is better than no answer.  Blanks or spaces filled with “I don’t

know" result in a lower grade.

            b.  Look to notes and example problems done in class to assist you.

5.  You MUST show all work for math problems.  No work = No credit.

6.  Textbook assignments:

a.  Include assignment (chapter, page, and question #s) in heading.

b.  Rewrite the questions in pen.

c.  Write answers in pencil.

d.  Answers should involve thorough explanations to receive full credit.

e.  You do not need to restate the questions nor do answers need to be in complete

sentences.  If appropriate, you can use lists, Venn Diagrams, etc instead.

7.   All work (homework, labs, quizzes, tests, extra credit, etc.) should be your own

work and in your own words. It is okay to study with other students but you

should not do the assignments together.  Anyone found to be sharing or copying work (from

any source) will receive a zero and other consequences.

Absences, Make-Up Work & Extra Help

Absence is a major cause for doing poorly in science.  We move at a quick rate.  One day out and you may miss an entire concept.  If you know you are going to be absent, please see me in advance and I will try to get you the work.  If you’re out for several days, contact the guidance department to get work from all teachers.

  1. Visit the website, before returning to class.  In particular, visit the “Homework” page to see what you missed, the “Missed Work” page to obtain any handouts or notes, and the “Newsflash” page for important announcements.
    1. WRITE the notes into your 3-ring binder.  (Don’t print them out unless told to do so since writing them will help you to learn the material.)
    2. Read any handouts or labs and attempt any worksheets to the best of your ability.  (If you do not have a printer, complete them on looseleaf and obtain the worksheet when you return to class.)
  2. If the missed work is not available on the website:
    1. NOTES: Check with your lab partner (or another student) to obtain these.  Copy them on your own time (ie. homeroom, study hall, activity period), not during class.
    2. WORKSHEETS/HANDOUTS/MAKE UP LABS: can be obtained from a folder on the side counter when you return to class.
  3. Quizzes & Tests:
    1. MUST be made up:

                                                              i.      Within 6 activity periods (visit the "Calendar of QUIZ & TEST Dates" page of my website or the bulletin board in class for last possible make-up date)

ii.      After school during activity period (T, W, Th) or late study (Th) (NOT in study hall)

    1. Obtain after school form from counter and give it to me at least 1 day before you want to stay to allow me time to get the work together for you.
    2. See “Help/Make-Up Schedule” page of my website or bulletin board for dates, times and places of activity periods/late study.
