What is SADD and what do they do?
Students Against Destructive
Decisions (SADD) is a nationwide
organization whose mission is to
educate students and help them
make smart, positive choices
about issues they face in their
lives. The Absegami SADD Club
has tackled issues such as drug
abuse, smoking, drunk driving,
and underage drinking.
During Red Ribbon week, held the
last week in October, SADD
members collected Drug-Free
pledges from the students and
staff to make a bulletin board in
2006. In 2007, SADD made posters
shaped like red ribbons. Inside
each poster was a different fact
about drug use. The Absegami
student body was encouraged to
collect the various facts to be
entered to win 2 movie passes to
the Regal movie theater. |

Great American Smokeout, November
For the Great American Smokeout,
held annually in November, SADD
members wore t-shirts with No
Smoking logos and took a vow of
silence for the day to bring
awareness to the dangers of
smoking. Members also worked
with REBEL members to make over
20 body outlines on the floors
throughout the school. Inside
each body outline was a "toe tag"
with a fact or statistic about
smoking. |

Kick Butts Day Carnival, March
For Kick Butts Day in
March, members passed out
brochures and information about
smoking. SADD also sponsored
contests and a carnival with
REBEL where students played games
about smoking statistics and
tobacco facts. Gift cards, t-
shirts, hats, backpacks and
Frisbees were among the prizes.
In addition to the contests and
carnival, a slideshow of tobacco
and smoking facts played on
GamiTV during lunches and study
halls. Hanging in the cafeteria
was a banner of 365 cigarette
cartons and packs to represent
how much the average smoker
smokes in a year. |

|
Cigarette Clean-Up for KBD Day
Last year, members participated
in a clean-up of school grounds.
With the help of REBEL and
Science club members, hundreds of
cigarettes were collected even
though smoking on school grounds
is illegal. |

|
Underage Drinking & Prom
SADD decorates the Junior and
Senior prom tables with anti-
drunk driving messages and
candy. We also work in
collaboration with other groups
to plan an event called the Mock
Crash which re-enacts what
happens during a drunk driving
accident as police and ambulance
members work to pull “victims”
from the wrecked cars. |

|
Community Service & Charity Work
SADD also encourages students to
make positive choices by getting
involved in community service.
We held a pink ribbon sale and
bake sale for breast cancer
awareness and donated 50% of the
money raised to the Susan G.
Komen Breast Cancer foundation.
Last year we raised over $500 for
the American Cancer
Society's "Making Strides Against
Breast Cancer" Walk. |

|
Clothing Drive
We also hold a clothing drive
each December. Over the last
several years, we have collected
over 6 carloads full of clothes
for the Goodwill. |

Hope to see you at a meeting!
