ILA (Integrated Language Arts)

 

Components of ILA:

  • Reader’s Workshop
  • Writer’s Workshop
  • Read Alouds
  • Shared Reading
  • Word Study

 

Within reader’s workshop students:

  • are introduced to a new strategy each day.
  • read for an uninterrupted, extended period of time each day while increasing reading stamina.
  • shop for “just right” books.
  • receive one to one or small group instruction.
  • talk about books with a reading partner and/or book club members.

 

Within writer’s workshop students:

  • are introduced to a new writing strategy each day.
  • are introduced to a “mentor text” to use as a model for writing.
  • write for an uninterrupted, extended period of time each day while increasing writing stamina.
  • receive one to one and/or small group writing instruction.
  • talk about writing with a writing partner.
  • Become “authors” during writing celebrations!

 

During the read aloud students:

  • listen as the teacher models the use of the active reading strategies.
  • build vocabulary.
  • increase comprehension as they “turn and talk”.
  • respond to literature.

 

During shared reading students:

  • use published writing as an anchor to learn a new strategy or skill.
  • share a copy of text with the teacher.
  • read along with the teacher (K-2)

 

During word study students:

  • increase sight vocabulary.
  • engage in sorting activities based on his/her developmental spelling level.
