Word Study

Vocabulary (based on the Big Words for Big Kids  POWER WORD program)

  • There will not be any new vocabulary words or quizzes until after the NJASK.
  • Power words are grouped in sets of 5.
  • Students will make and record words in their Word Study Notebook. The final "secret word" will be a POWER WORD. Students will sort words by their roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
  • After 5 POWER WORDS are made, we will study the meanings of the roots, prefixes, and suffixes of those POWER WORDS.
  • Students will take a vocabulary quiz at the end of each set. This quiz will consist of matching the power words to their definitions, completing fill-in-the-blank sentences using the power words, and indentifying the prefixes, root words, and suffixes of each power word.
