Dear Boys and Girls,
Recently I've been reading, In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson by Bettte Bao Lord. As I was reading I thought about what it must have been like for my best friend and her family to move to Los Angeles from the Phillipians when she was five. Like Shirley in the story, Elma was a young girl maybe five when she come to the United States. In chaper two Shirley moves to America with her mom to be with her dad who had come earlier. She had never seen a refirgerator and is amazed that they no longer need to shop daily. She is overwhelmed by all the new changes as my friend Elma was when she moved here.
In the third chapter, I made another connection, a text to self connection. In this chapter, Shirley is going to school and doesn't speak English well. Her teacher smiles and tries to make her feel welcomed. I remember teaching first grade when a new boy, Marcus came from Guatamala. He had never been to school, like Shirley. He didn't understand English and would smile and nod back to me when I gave instructions. I spoke to him the same way Mrs. Rappaport does to Shirley with a kind smile and a gentle tone to show compassion and understanding. I wanted him to feel welcomed and learn as much as he could so he would feel like he belonged. Shirley likes her teacher because her teacher makes her feel comfortable.
I predict she will learn to speak and read from Mrs. Rappaport. If she continues to try hard and keeps practicing her speech with the miror she uses in her bedroom, she will do well. Marcus did and she reminds me a lot of him. Everyone liked him at first and understood English was new for him but after awhile some kids ignored him and he kept trying and trying to fit in. Shirley will learn English like Marcus if she continues to try hard. I hope so anyway.
Your teacher,
Mrs. Chartoff
Students who leave for band, GATE, or any other pull out program must make up the work they miss unless I initial his/her assignment book and indicate otherwise.
I expect a note such as, "left for band" and the date to be on the page so I know the student may have missed part of the lesson. It is the student's responsiblity to come to me AFTER SCHOOL to clarify what needs to be completed. It is also the student's responsibilty to complete the work that same night so that on the next day he/she will be caught up. ************************************************************
Absent??? You have additional time to catch up on writing but remember each day we usually continue to build on the previous day. If you are absent for more than 2 days someone should come to school to pick up assignments or arrange for a classmate/sibbling to take it home to you so you do not fall too far behind. See "Homework Buddy" letter for setting up arrangements (Helpful Handouts).

I will review Writer's Notebook during weekly conferences and in some cases daily. It will be stored in class unless you have to finish classwork.
PLEASE RETURN NOTEBOOKS EVERY DAY BECAUSE WE USE THEM EVERY DAY IN SCHOOL.
