****************************************************************************************************** During the 2007-2008 school year East Brunswick Schools will be using the lastest version of Everyday Mathmatics. For returning families, you will notice many changes. For example, students will have a Resource Book to take home that provides terrific examples for every skill.  Home Link homework sheets will have answers provided to help parents quickly review and check student work.  Parent Letters are set up to what I would compare to a "Study Guide." There are many more games and directions for every game is available for families in the child's resource book.  I am looking forward to using the new program and hope that you will let me know what you think of it too.

Memorizing basic math facts 1-10 were mastered in first grade by most children for both addition and subtraction. However, many are still working on the rest 11-18, especially the subtraction facts. Students play a variety of games to practice and reinforce this skill in class. Parents should spend time encouraging their child to memorize these facts. Play games or use flashcards in the car or while dressing; at least a few minutes here and there. Also, when using flashcards or fact triangles, have your child say and write the fact whenever possible.   Second grade students are allowed to use their number grid for the entire year when completing homework at home please keep it available as a tool (resource).

 *********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

At home, parents may want to try the following strategy to help children make change. Think of fractions and do the following:

When teaching the students how to make change I show them using coins and drawing coins using the P, N, D, and Q symbols.

For example, I am going to buy a notepad for 84 cents. I pay with a dollar $1.00. How much change will I receive?

      1.  I tell the students to draw a line: ______________ write the amount paying below the line --$1.00

       2.  I have them put the item cost (buying amount) on the top of the line and the amount paying with below the line.

                                 84 ____

                                  100

***Parents may see the fraction now (84/100)

       3. Then, I have them count up, drawing coins, until they reach the amount paid.

                                 84 P_N_D (85, 90, 100)

                                      100

     4. Finally,  count the coins and that is the change.  D, N, P =16cents
