Just a reminder that during the week of May 5, 2008, second grade students will begin taking the Tera Nova standardize test and the In-View IQ test. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of rest those days and arrives having had a nutritious breakfast. Students will take Practice Test to familiarize them with the format in terms of filling in bubbles dark and completely, no talking, seating arrangements, listening to verbal directions that may/may not appear in their booklet. I have tried to talk to the children in a positive way that you can do at home as well to explain why we are taking the test. Explain that the purpose of taking an achievement test is to find out which skills have been learned and which skills need further development. Some questions may be more difficult than others and that some material may be new to students; students are NOT expected to know all the answers. Students will have ample time to do their best. The test requires no special preparation. Coming to school regularly is the preparation because the test is testing what the child has learned. Thank you, for helping to ensure the students are well rested and able to concentrate during this week of testing. v v Finding the lesson of the story. v Using the story to verify information when choosing an answer. v Combining simple sentences to make a more complex sentence. v Finding the main idea----This story is mostly about… v Contractions v Root or base words v Friendly letter format v Compound words Ø Adding and subtracting (no regrouping) Ø Identifying patterns Ø Measuring Ø Using graphs or calendars to answer questions. All of these are skills that are characteristic of second grade activities that have been done throughout the year.
Please consider the following suggestions for helping your child perform as well as he or she is able on the test: · See that your child gets a good night’s sleep, especially on the night before a test. Testing will be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. · Make sure he or she eats a healthy breakfast. · Practice with your child the use of a timer to start and end an activity. · Remind your child about general test-taking strategies, such as: ü Stay calm and focus on the task ü Listen to or read all the directions ü Look over the entire section before beginning ü Stay only in the section being worked on at the time ü Read all the answer choices before choosing one ü Don’t spend too much time on any one item ü Take all the time allowed; look back over your answers If your child expresses anxiety about taking the tests, talk about what might be causing these feelings. Then talk about ways to overcome these feelings. Having your support plus knowledge of good test-taking skills will go along way toward your child’s standardized test scores. Thank you for your help! |
